PHOTOGRAPHY

This programme will give you broad knowledge and experience of advertising and editorial photography including stills, animated imagery, video and associated post-production techniques. The degree will provide you with the skills to become a confident and successful contemporary image maker, preparing you for a career within commercial photography, creative media and fine art.

The reason why I am interested in this course is because the University has strong links with local studios, design agencies and a professional printing lab in London. Also what I really like is the fact that there are several galleries that will allow us to undertake work experience which would be really helpful as a student.

YEAR 1: There will be an introduction to photography and its key concepts, themes, genres and approaches. You will receive both practical and theoretical teaching for still and moving images lens-based media techniques, alongside historical and contemporary appreciation and cultural theory. Furthermore you will acquire an understanding of how the advertising, editorial, media industry and fine art sector work together.

YEAR 2: There are specialist modules designed to build upon the broad practical and theoretical knowledge gained in Year 1. The focus is on more development of our ideas and concepts. You would work on 'Live' projects with clients and enter national professional photography competitions. Also explore career development opportunities and carry out primary research in to practitioners that interest you and the relationship between fine art and commercial practice. You can also undertake work experience.

YEAR 3: Finally we would apply and refine the skills and ideas that we have developed in the past two years. The focus is on developing independent ventures supporting your final major project and dissertation. You will complete a substantial body of specialist photographic work that will be presented in an exhibition and/or publication. Furthermore we would also work on producing a professional photographic portfolio that has to be supported by a website and other marketing materials that will help you to secure employment or further your studies. The professional development module includes a skills audit, SWOT analysis, personality traits profiling and a thorough exploration of the roles best suited for you.
