He wants to be someone great and adventurous, he doesn't just want to be what his parents want him to be, or listen to what they say will be best for his life. He wants to be himself, make his own decisions, and go live off the land. He doesn't take things for granted. He realized what was important to hi and what wasn't and did what he wanted with his life.
