Beginning of the French Revolution

The beginning of the French Revolution was a chaotic period in French history. The way laws were passed was a system called the "Estates General", and there were many flaws in this failed system. There were three main social classes, or Estate, and each one had one vote in the political process. The First and Second Estate were Church Officials and Nobles, and made up 11% of the population and paid no taxes. The Third Estate were commoners, and made up 89% of the population and paid all of the taxes. The main issue with the Estates General was that the First and Second Estate would always outvote the Third Estate, and only made laws that benefited themselves. The Third Estate complained to the King, and the King set up a meeting between the Estates to discuss their issues. The Third Estate proposed a new type of government called the "National Assembly", which was like the Estates General, but instead of each Estate getting one vote each, representation was based upon population. The First and Second Estates had been living easily because they could always make a law when they had a problem, so they opposed this idea of having representation based upon population because it would make the system fair, and therefore not allow them to do whatever they want at the expense of the Third Estate. One time at the National Assembly, the First and Second Estates locked the doors to the palace. The Third Estate, unable to get into the Assembly, gathered at the Tennis Courts and took an oath. The people who gathered at the Tennis Courts vowed that they wouldn't disband until a constitution was in place because they felt that the government had failed the people of France. This event would be known as the "Tennis Court Oath". The Third Estate attempted to make a peaceful step to revolutionize France, but the King's response by putting troops around the Palace of Versailles and in cities to prevent the people from uprising wasn't exactly peaceful.

The middle of the French Revolution was a very hopeless time in French history. The start of the middle of the French Revolution was marked by the "Storming of the Bastille". The Third Estate felt that their rights were being threatened, and the Bastille(a French Military base), held many political prisoners from the Third Estate. The people stormed the Bastille, actually took over the base, and put the General's head on a pitchfork. Around the same time, the women of France were angry over the increasing prices of bread and wheat. There were rumors that the Queen of France was hoarding all of the wheat, and she was spending uncontrollably. The women marched on the Palace of Versailles with weapons in hand, and demanded to see the King and Queen. This was a very justifiable action because the people were starving in the streets, while the King and Queen ate all of the food that they wanted. After the "March on Versailles" the monarchy attempted to make the people happy by creating the "Legislative government". This form of government was sort of like a Constitutional Monarchy in that it tried to make the King and the people happy. This didn't last very long because of two main reasons. The first reason this government failed was France had never had a government that wasn't a monarchy, and didn't know how to keep it stable. The second reason that it failed was the Legislative had very poor leadership that made bad decisions. By one vote the Legislative government voted to execute King Louis XVI after he had attempted to overthrow the Legislative government with the help of other monarchies around the world. During this period of chaos a man named Robespierre emerged and won the favor of the people for being an advocate for the Third Estate and being "incorruptible". He creates the "First Republic" which was a form of government that Robespierre was the leader of, and was supposed to properly represent the people. Robespierre let the power he had get to his head and eventually started the "Reign of Terror". This was a scary period in French history, and Robespierre would go on to kill anyone who spoke out against the revolution. Eventually the French Military overthrew him and put him to death; ending the Reign of Terror.

End of the French Revolution

The end of the French Revolution started at a time when the French government was the "Directory". This government took over after the Reign of Terror , and it was made up of an upper house and a lower house. The Lower house would propose laws, and the Upper house would either accept or veto the proposed laws, but the main problem with this idea was that the two houses couldn't collaborate to create better laws for the benefit of everyone. Napoleon Bonaparte was a military genius , and in 1799 overthrew the Directory and named himself "First Consul". As leader of France, Napoleon invaded Egypt, conquered Austria, Prussia, Portugal and Spain, used a "Continental System" to weaken England and disconnect it from trade, and put his family members of all of the countries he conquered. All of this was an attempt to dominate Europe ,and unite Europe under French rule. As leader of France he created the "Napoleonic Code" which was a simple law system for France, he dissolved the Estates system which had been an issue for French society for years, he allowed the freedom of religion which created a sense of peace among religions in France, he stabilized the French government by making it centered around him, he passed many reforms in education which bettered the French education system, he improved French relations with the Pope, and sold the "Louisiana Purchase" to America to help fund his European military campaigns. His military conquests fizzled out after his failed invasion of Russia in 1812. He was eventually defeated for good at the Battle of Waterloo, and was exiled to a remote island called Saint Helena. Napoleon had a lasting impact on France and the world. During Napoleon's reign, France dominated mainland Europe, he made many of his family members rulers of his conquered nations, and his conquests created a new idea of strong national pride called "Nationalism".
