I can relate to the author by being in a situation where I have to translate documents or a phone call.

Something that stood out to me while reading over Amy Tan’s story is her recounting of being her mother’s translator when it came to serious information/issues. It reminds me how in my own family all my siblings are bilingual, but our parents have “broken” English, and there would be times where we had to translate important documents, calls, etc for them— and while this is such a common experience with immigrant families, it’s makes me feel seen.

Mother Tongue sparks the talk of langue and the effect on immigrant children and how language barriers reflect not just the growth of the children but their idealism in languages. The story speaks about the importance of learning and understanding how languages reflect people. The story speaks about how people get treated because of their English or lack of when it comes to coming to a new country. The story shows the negative effects of not knowing English has on people and their children because they do not grow with a perfect English. Overall the story speaks about the lack of vision when it comes to the English language and reflecting with its own self. Something I found interesting was when the narrater speaks about how she has good English yet she still lack the fundematal because of her mother's English and what she grew up on. Overall the story speaks pn the effects immigrants have on the world and people because of what they speak and how it affects them personally. And how immigrants are pushed to be something they do not want to be.
