Adab in seeking knowledge is considered pivotal and is rooted in both the teachings of the Quran and the examples set by the Prophet Muhammad SAW.

1. Intention (Niyyah): The pursuit of knowledge should be grounded in the right intention, seeking to please Allah and benefit oneself and the community. We should set our niyyah of gaining knowledge which is supposedly solely to gain the pleasure of Allah SWT.

2. Consistent Learning: We as Muslims are encouraged to continually seek knowledge, regardless of age or status, as there is no end for the learning process, and we should fight any obstacles that comes in between.

3. Respect the teachers: When engaging with a teacher or scholar, maintaining an attitude of attentiveness and respect is crucial. This involves listening actively and avoiding interruptions.

4. Balance Between Knowledge and Action: Adab entails not only acquiring knowledge but also applying it in daily life. It is emphasized that knowledge without action is not beneficial.

Some Adab Tips Before Studying
1. Make wudhu’
2. Set the intention
3. Do 2 rakaat nawafil solat
4. Face Qibla, if possible
5. Have a balanced state of mind

6. Perform ablution

• Islam: Jibril asks the Prophet about the pillars of Islam. The Prophet responds by listing the five pillars:

  • Shahada: The declaration of faith

  • Salat: Performing the five daily prayers.

  • Zakat: Giving charity to the poor and needy.

  • Sawm: Fasting during the month of Ramadan.

  • Hajj: Performing the pilgrimage to Mecca, if able.

• Iman (Faith): Jibril then asks about the articles of faith, and the Prophet explains the following:

  • Belief in Allah: The One God.

  • Belief in the Angels: Spiritual beings who carry out God's commands.

  • Belief in the Scriptures: Including the Torah, Psalms, Gospel, and Quran.

  • Belief in the Prophets: Acknowledging all the prophets, from Adam to Muhammad (PBUH).

  • Belief in the Day of Judgment: The final reckoning of all beings.

  • Belief in Divine Decree (Qadar): Believing that everything happens according to God's will.

• Ihsan (Excellence): Jibril inquires about Ihsan, or spiritual excellence. The Prophet explains it as:

  • Worshiping Allah as though you see Him, and even though you do not see Him, knowing that He sees you.

• Signs of the Hour: Finally, Jibril asks about the signs of the Last Day (the Hour). The Prophet mentions two signs:

  • The servant will give birth to her mistress: This is interpreted as social upheaval and loss of dignity in society.

  • People will be barefoot, poor, and competing to build tall buildings: This signifies materialism and arrogance among people.

1. Belief in Allah (God):

• Oneness of Allah (Tawhid): This is the core belief in Islam. It means that Allah is the one and only God, with no partners, associates, or equals.

• Allah’s Names and Attributes: Muslims believe in the 99 beautiful names of Allah, such as Ar-Rahman (The Merciful). Each of the names reflects an aspect of His infinite and perfect qualities.

  
  

  2. Belief in Angels:

• Nature of Angels: Angels are spiritual beings created from light, and they do not have free will. They are pure, obedient to Allah, and carry out specific tasks as assigned by Him.

  
  

  3. Belief in the Books of Allah:

  • Divine Revelations: Muslims believe that Allah sent down scriptures to guide humanity, and these scriptures were revealed to specific prophets.

    • The Qur'an: The final and most complete revelation, revealed to Prophet Muhammad (SAW) over 23 years. It is considered the literal word of Allah, preserved without alteration.

    • The Qur'an offers timeless guidance for all aspects of life.

4. Belief in the Prophets and Messengers:

• Allah sent prophets and messengers to every nation throughout history to guide them toward worshiping the One true God, Allah SWT, and to promote justice and righteousness.

• Prophet Muhammad SAW is considered the Seal of the Prophets, meaning no prophets will come after him, and his message is considered universal for all people.

5. Belief in the Day of Judgment:

• Muslims believe in the Day of Judgment (Yawm al-Qiyama), a day when all human beings will be resurrected and judged for their deeds. This day will mark the end of the world and the beginning of eternal life.

• The belief in the Day of Judgment encourages Muslims to live righteous lives, seek forgiveness, and strive for a good outcome in the Hereafter.

6. Belief in Divine Predestination (Qadr):

• Qadr (Divine Destiny) refers to the belief that everything in the universe, including human actions, is preordained by Allah. However, this does not negate human free will. Humans are accountable for their actions and choices, and their free will is part of Allah’s divine plan.

• This belief teaches that everything happens for a reason, and while individuals may face difficulties and challenges, they trust that Allah’s plan is perfect, wise, and full of mercy.

• Understanding Qadr can bring peace, as it helps believers accept both blessings and challenges, knowing they are part of Allah’s greater wisdom.

In Islam, Ihsan means doing things in the best possible way, especially when it comes to worshiping Allah. It is about having a strong sense of Allah’s presence in every action, as if you are seeing Him, even though you cannot physically see Him.

Eschatology in Islam refers to the belief in the Day of Judgment, where everyone’s deeds are judged, and their eternal fate is decided. Ihsan and eschatology are closely connected because the way we live with Ihsan affects our standing on the Day of Judgment.

• The concept of Ihsan makes a Muslim aware that Allah sees everything they do. This awareness influences how they live, knowing that all actions are recorded for judgment.

• Ihsan involves purifying the heart and soul. By removing negative traits like envy or pride, a person strives to be better in the sight of Allah. This purification is important on the Day of Judgment as it determines one’s outcome — either reward in Jannah or punishment in Jahannam (hell).

• Ihsan leads Muslims to act in ways that reflect the qualities of the people of Jannah (like patience and humility). Those who embody these traits are rewarded in the afterlife, while those who neglect them are warned of punishment in Jahannam.

• Muslims with Ihsan understand that life is a test. They live with the goal of pleasing Allah and preparing for the afterlife, rather than focusing only on material gains. This mindset helps them make choices that will lead to success in the Hereafter.

Adab in Islam refers to the proper manners and conduct that a Muslim should follow in order to live a respectful and harmonious life in accordance with Islamic teachings. This week focuses on the concept of adab as it applies to three important areas of life.

1. Adab Towards Parents

In Islam, parents has very special status. Their role is seen as vital in a child’s life. The adab towards parents are not just about obedience, but also about kindness, understanding, and expressing gratitude.

• Respect and obedience are the foundation of adab towards parents.

• Muslims are encouraged to make dua for their parents, especially when they are no longer alive, by praying for their forgiveness and mercy.

• Thanking parents, taking time to appreciate their sacrifices, and showing gratitude for their efforts.

2. Adab Towards Society

Being a responsible member of society is a key aspect of Islam.

• Part of good adab involves helping those in need.

• Muslims are encouraged to treat all members of the society, especially other Muslims, as part of a larger brotherhood or family.

3. Adab as a Friend

In Islam, friendship is highly valued.

• One of the elements of good friendship is loyalty. A true friend is someone who is always there for you, supports you, and stands by you in difficult times.

• A good friend is also someone who gives honest advice, especially when it’s needed the most.

• Islam teaches patience in friendships. A good friend is patient, forgiving, and understanding when conflicts arise.
