Firstly it used to be a bustling trading port, with many living in the shophouses nearby. It was also used as somewhat of a “playground” for the kids in the neighbourhood. Some of their favourite antics was to catch a ride to the Elgin Bridge on the heavily loaded tongkangs [vessels] that plied the river by climbing on to the rubber tyres on their sides.
