LECTURE SESSION

Assalamualaikum to Dr Syakirah, my name is Ayuni Nadrah binti Kamarujaman and my matric number is D20162075551. I will expressed my thought during the 13 weeks from being part of the animal physiology student. I will concluded what I had learned from the lecture session, lab session, field work trip, mid semester test and lastly, mini project. Through reading outline, I realized that there was a great difference with other courses that I took on this semester. First, almost all course have only one lecturer for the whole 14 week but in this courses, I had two lecturer which is Dr Syakirah and Dr Norliana. Second, the course arrangement is two hours on lecturer and two allocate for lab session. At the beginning of this course I felt that it would be simpler than compared with other courses. In fact, I was wrong. I need to spend more time on this subject. This subject is becoming interesting since we have to go outside for the fieldwork trip.

Firstly, for the lecture session. For the first 7 weeks, I had class and lab session with Dr Syakirah. Topic that’s covered by her are 1) introduction of animal physiology 2)nervous system 3)sensory system 4)muscular system and 5)circulatory system. For the first week, we did not have classes because of the public holiday. We only started our class on Tuesday in week two because on Monday also got public holiday. On the first topic which is the introduction to animal physiology. At first, I was bit confused because for my point of view I tend to similarize between animal physiology with animal histology that I took in last semester. As Dr Syakirah explained to us, animal physiology is more on the scientific study of the life-supporting properties, functions and processes of animals or their parts. The discipline covers key homeostatic processes, such as the regulation of temperature, blood flow and hormones.

Next, for the second topic which is nervous system. This topic is my weakest part of all the topic. Because, for me it has a lot of uncommon familiar name that I need to memorize and also the mechanism involved is a bit confusing. Dr syakirah and we discussed on this topic in the lecture session. For this particular topic, we had given a task by Dr Syakirah which is a PBL (Problem Based Learning). We had given a situation, and we need to identify the problem had occurred in that situation the carry out a research to solve the problem. At first, I was a bt blurred because I never had an experienced in conducting this kind of task. So, it is a bit challenging for my group and I to solve it. We together as a group having a group meeting and doing our research together. But by the guide Dr Syakirah gave, we able to complete the task and presented it to the class.

For the third topic which is the sensory system. This topic, for me more the easier part. Not that easy, but less complicated compared to nervous system. I a bit enjoyed learned on this topic. Move on into topic four that is muscular system. For me, this topic also one of my weakest part. I am also having a hard time while doing lab session and completing the lab report. But, with the help of my group studies, I be able to catch up some of the difficult part on this topic. And lastly is the circulatory system. This topic, is my favourite topic of the five. It is because for me it is the easiest to understand and the mechanism itself likely familiar to me. I think it is because I really focus on this topic more compare to the other topic. But, I will try to balance out the differences so that all the topic I can covered equally.

Next, classes with Dr Liana. With Dr Liana, we covered five topics which are respiratory system, immune system, endocrine system, digestive system and excretory system. In my opinion, Dr Liana did a pretty well in explanation. She explained in details about the content, mechanism involved, she also did varies activities to help us understand the topic. For example, for immune system we had be tasked to a do casting based on subtopic B-Lymphocyte. All us was given a week to prepare the script and so on. At first, we actually made a mistake because we misunderstood the topic, but during class, Dr Liana gave us some time to prepare it back. Next, in while class we also had discussion for the topics. The topics including currents issues related to topic we learned.

LABORATORY SESSION

Each week our group has group meeting in Tuanku Bainun library, discussion always continue on two hours or the whole afternoon for finished our lab report. After discussion, each member needs to spend long time on researching materials in internet and evaluating them. Although the process is hard, the result is wonderful. After the efforts of our teammates, our group has accomplished all the lab reports on time. For me, the lab report for this course a bit challenging. It is because, I having a hard time times to understand the lab manual. During the lab session, I also a bit lost. After that, when the time for me doing the lab report then only I understand it. For me, it is the hardest part is looking for the reliable references to do a discussion.

TRIP TO IMR

On 9th October, we as 31 students and two lecturer which are Dr Syakirah dan Dr Rosmilah went to Institute Medical Research (IMR) at Jalan Pahang, Kuala Lumpur for the IMR Open Day. The Institute for Medical Research (IMR) was established by the British in 1900 as the Pathological Institute in Kuala Lumpur, with the aim to promote the health status of the local population. Today, the main functions of the IMR are research, specialised diagnostic services, training and technical consultancies. The IMR is the biomedical research arm of the Ministry of Health, Malaysia. Research programmes of the Institute are aligned with the health research priority areas and health needs of the country. Research is also carried out with the purpose of developing enabling technologies or products and identifying new biomarkers for use in the early detection and diagnosis of disease, monitoring of disease progression and targeted therapy.

We departed from UPSI at 8 am in the morning and arrived there an hour later. When we arrive there, there a lot of people from other institution and high schools already there. We are free to go to any sections that we want. There was lot of activities that being held on the particular day. For example the first one is research booth. There are 10 zones if I not mistaken it started at zone A until zone I. My friends and I started at zone I. In this zone, they have 5-6 booth research booth. As I remembered, one of the booth teach us on how to a CPR to adult. I learned a few steps of CPR can be taken if someone is being unconscious. It was new knowledge for me, since I never had any chance to learn this anywhere.

Next, I went to insect repellent section. In this section, I learned a lot. For example in IMR, they are conducted a research on insect and small pest can be vector to bring disease like cockroaches and mosquito. I learned that male mosquito did not bite you, only the female does. So, I try to put my hand inside of the male mosquito cage and they really do not bite me. I moved to next agenda which is the open museum. In there, I saw a few of old machine that being used in the old time like centrifuge. I also got opportunity to see by myself preserved baby in jar. Then, I went to innovation competition by high school student. I really impressed by their creativity. Because, they came out with brilliant and unique idea to present their creation.

Then when in the afternoon, my friends and I went to buy our food at food truck there. There a few food truck that sold many food and drinks. After that, we went to library. At there, Paula and I trying our luck to have a quiz based on the history of IMR. We been there like one hour trying to the questions. It was really a difficult questions but we did not give up and keep trying. After changed our answers many times, we finally flnalized our answer and submit it. Fortunately, our luck. Paula and me won got prefect score on that quiz and we received the hamper.

Lastly, we have been informed by Dr Syakirah that we will go back to UPSI at 4 pm. So, since the time around 30 minutes to be 4 pm. I decided to have last meal at the food truck. I thinner than normal spaghetti. It was really experienced for me. Even, it was tiring day but I gained a lot of new knowledge that I can practically use in the future.
