         <title>MARGARITA SALAS (1938-2019)  by Lourdes Molejon </title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p><strong>LIFE:</strong></p><p>Margarita Salas was born on the 30th of November of 1938 in Canero (Asturias), and she died on the 7th of November of 2019 in Madrid. </p><p><br/></p><p><strong>HER FAMILY:</strong></p><p>Her mother was Margarita Falgueras, she was a teacher, and her father was José Salas, he was a doctor. She had one brother, José, and one sister, María Luisa. They also dedicated their life to science. </p><p><br/></p><p>Margarita got married to Eladio Viñuela, who was also a scientist. They had one daughter, Lucía.</p><p><br/></p><p><strong>PROFESSIONAL CAREER:</strong></p><p>She studied in a religious school. </p><p>She went to the University of Chemistry in Madrid. </p><p>In the summer of 1958 she met Severo Ochoa, Nobel Prize, born in Luarca (Asturias). He had a great influence on Margarita Salas’s career and </p><p>they worked together in the laboratory. </p><p> In 1964 Margarita and her husband went to United States of America to work in a </p><p>laboratory. </p><p>Three years later they came back to Spain for do an investigation to do research on the Bacillus virus phage Phi29. </p><p>Margarita was a teacher of molecular genetics for 23 years at the Complutense University of Madrid. She was the president of the Spanish Society of Biochemistry and the director of the </p><p>Institute of Molecular Biology of the CSIC.          <description><![CDATA[<p><strong>LIFE:</strong></p><p>Ada Lovelace was born on the 10th of December of 1815 in the United Kingdom, and she died on the 27th of November of 1852</p><p><br></p><p><strong>HER FAMILY</strong>:</p><p>Her mother was Anna Isabella Noel Byron, she was a poet, matematic and activist, her father was Lord Byron, he was a poet. She had one sister, Allegra Byron, she was a poet.</p><p><br></p><p><strong>MARRIAGE:</strong></p><p>Ada Lovelace got married to William King in the 1835,(He was 11 years old than Ada)  and they had 3 kids, Byron, Annabella and Ralph.</p><p><br></p><p><strong>PROFESSIONAL CAREER:</strong></p><p>Ada Lovelace went in the University of London, and she studied Mathematics and Computer Science. In the 1845 she met with Charles Babbage, Charles invited Ada to saw a new invent, it was a machine that could do simple calculations.(In this years it was very difficult to created and to saw that) Ada decided to help the machine with more informatic programs to can do more difficult calculations, Ada thought it was better if the machine can use words not only numbers, it was a very difficult job for Ada and Charles, but they can do it. Later Ada was working in a analitic machine built of Charles, and he was suprised for the mind of Ada, he never saw a woman more inteligent than she. She died on May 29, 1857 in Ceuta.</p><p><br></p><p><strong>HER FAMILY:</strong></p><p>Daughter of Pedro Juan Francisco Ramón Saragossa Labastida, and Raimunda Domènech Gasull, both natives of Fulleda (Lérida)</p><p><br></p><p><strong>MARRIAGE:</strong></p><p>Agustina got married to Juan Roca Vilaseca</p><p><br></p><p><strong>PROFESSIONAL CAREER:</strong></p><p>On 15 June 1808, the French armies attempted to enter the Aragonese capital through the gates of Carmen and Portillo without success. There was an attack on 2 July and Agustina took charge of a battery and fired the cannon at the attackers, preventing, along with other participants, the entry of the French into the city, who had to lift the siege on 15 August.</p><p>She took part in the battle for the convent of Jerusalem in Zaragoza and in the sieges of Teruel and Tortosa, where after being taken prisoner she managed to escape. Her risky participation in the conflict earned her a pension of 100 reales which was granted to her by the Spanish government.</p><p><br></p><p><strong>WHY IS SHE IMPORTANT?</strong></p><p>Agustina de Aragón is the name by which Agustina Zaragoza Domenech is known, for her heroism in the War of Independence (1808-1814), and in particular for her patriotic feat during the first siege of Zaragoza.</p><p><br></p><p><br></p>]]></description>

He died on the 19th of April 1882, in Downe (Great London).</p><p><br/></p><p><strong>HIS FAMILY:</strong></p><p>He was son of the doctor Robert Darwin and Susannah Wedgwood. His family was a well known intellectual family.</p><p><br/></p><p><strong>MARRIAGE:</strong></p><p>He got married to his cousin, Emma Darwin. He had ten sons and daughters, including the famous Leonard, George, Anne and Francis Darwin.</p><p><br/></p><p><strong>PROFESSIONAL CAREER:</strong></p><p>He is known for the naturalistic trip for five years in the ship Beagle.          <description><![CDATA[<p><strong>LIFE:</strong></p><p>Rosalind Franklin was born on the 25th July of 1920 in the United Kingdom, and she died on the 16th of April of 1958.</p><p><br/></p><p><strong>HER FAMILY:</strong></p><p>Her mother was Muriel Frances Waley, and her father was Ellis Arthur Franklin he was a banker, she also had four brothers David, Colin, Roland, and Jenifer.</p><p><br/></p><p><strong>MARRIAGE:</strong></p><p>She doesn´t marriege with nobady.</p><p><br/></p><p><strong>PROFESSIONAL CAREER:</strong></p><p>At the age of fifteen she decided to study for a university degree, passing the entrance exam for Newnham College, Cambridge, which led to disagreements within the family, as her father did not look favourably on women studying at university. However, both her aunt and her mother helped her in this regard and in 1941 she obtained her university degree. In 1945 she obtained a PhD in Physical Chemistry and a year later she moved to Paris to work at the State Central Laboratory of Chemical Services. In 1951 she returned to London, to King's College, to the Biophysics Unit, where she began her research on DNA, research that was also carried out by Maurice Wilkins, with whom she had constant disputes. In a sexist and difficult environment, Rosalind obtained a photo of the doble elix of the DNA. In the years following her early death, James Watson and Francis Crick were awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1962, thanks to Frank's efforts.          <description><![CDATA[<p><strong>Life:</strong></p><p>Leonardo da Vinci was born on April 15th, 1452, in Vinci (Italy) and he died on May 2nd, 1519.</p><p><br></p><p><strong>His family:</strong></p><p>His father was Piero Fruosino di Antonio, and his mom was Caterina.</p><p><br></p><p><strong>Marriage:</strong></p><p>He never got married and he did not have any children.</p><p><br></p><p><strong>Professional career:</strong></p><p>He was trained as a goldsmith and blacksmith, but he was also a painter, inventor and sculptor.</p><p>He worked for Lorenzo de Médeci, who was very powerful and patron of the arts.</p><p>His most famous work is the painting called The Mona Lisa, also known as The Joconde. It is famous because many people think Mona Lisa's smile is mysterious. The Mona Lisa is shown at the Louvre Museum in Paris. In 1911, the painting was stolen by a worker of the museum. He hid it in his apartment for two years. He stole it because he wanted to take the painting to Italy, to an Italian museum. Finally, he was caught.</p><p>Other famous paintings are: The Last Supper, Saint John the Baptist or The Baptism of Christ.</p><p><br></p><p><strong>Why is he important?</strong></p><p>Leonardo da Vinci was famous for his designs, which helped to invent things like the tank, parachute, helicopter and many other things. Professinal  career:
He began her studies in mathematics at the University of Michigan and later moved to Earlham College, where she graduated with a degree in Mathematics in 1958. Her desire was to continue studying, but unfortunately, her had to leave her studies to work as a high school mathematics and French teacher so that her husband could finish his degree at Harvard. Later, following his dream, she moved to Boston to study mathematics.
Her life began to change in 1960, when she went to work in the Department of Meteorology. Thanks to her knowledge in mathematics and the teacher's lessons she learned several programming languages ​​by herself. She was one of the persons involved in designing a software that allowed predicting the weather.
Later, she became involved in the SAGE project, a project at MIT's Lincon Laboratory developed between 1961 and 1963. In that project, Margaret was the responsible of developing the software for the first computer that searched for a aircraft in North American airspace.


Why is she important?:
She was the person who made Apollo 11 land on the moon by programming a special software.

There he inmersed himself in Aristoteles and Descartes, before graduating in 1665.</p><p><br/></p><p>WHY HE IS IMPORTAN?</p><p>Newton is well known for his discoveries in optics (white light composition) and mathematics (calculus), it is his formulation of the three laws of motion (the basic principles of modern physics) for which he is most famous.          <description><![CDATA[<p>Pablo Neruda: was born on July 12, 1904 in Parral, a town in central Chile. </p><p><strong>FAMILY: </strong></p><p>His father, José del Carmen Reyes, was a railroad worker; his mother, Rosa Neftalí Basoalto, died a month after his birth, from tuberculosis. After a few years, he moved with his father to Temuco, where he had remarried Doña Trinidad Candia Valverde (or Marverde, as the poet would call her).</p><p><br/></p><p><strong>MARRIAGE:</strong></p><p>Pablo Neruda got married to Maryka Antonieta Hagenaar Vogelzang (m. 1930-1942), too by Delia del Carril (1943-1966), and in the last years of his life by Matilde Urrutia (m. 1966-1973)</p><p>Pablo Neruda had an only daughter, with his first wife, named Malva Marina Trinidad Reyes, who died at the age of 8, due to hydrocephalus.</p><p><br/></p><p><strong>PROFESSIONAL CAREER: </strong></p><p>Ricardo Eliécer Neftalí Reyes Basoalto (1904-1973), better known as Pablo Neruda, was a Chilean writer and poet, considered one of the most outstanding and influential intellectuals of twentieth-century literature. The author also had an outstanding participation in the political life of his country.</p><p>Neruda began his professional career in 1920 when he was still a high school student. At that time he served as director of the Literary Athenaeum of the Liceo de Temuco. He also collaborated in the publication Selva Austral.</p><p>Neruda's literary work was avant-garde. His poetic repertoire went through three stages: the transition towards innovation, the dark and hermetic and the one related to politics. </p><p>His literary production was extensive and known worldwide. The author's most representative titles were: Crepusculario, Veinte poemas de amor y una canción desesperada, Canto general, España en el corazón and Cien sonetos de amor. </p><p><br/></p><p><strong>NOBEL PRIZE:</strong></p><p>In 1971 he received the Nobel Prize for Literature and the Lenin Peace Prize. Before that, he had won the National Prize for Literature (1945). </p><p><br/></p><p><strong>WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO ME? </strong></p><p>Because he has written many poems and I think they are very beautiful. He was a great writer and a person committed to his ideas, who helped many people. Alejandro Magno and Parisátide had a <strong>child </strong>also called  <strong>Alexander</strong>, but he was murdered.</p><p><br/></p><p><strong>PROFESIONAL CAREER:</strong></p><p>Alexander the Great was a<strong> Militar Lider</strong> in Asia, Egypt... Wen his father was away, <strong>he studied</strong>: maths, archery, and other subjects. He studied at the university of Erfurt. In 1434 worked as a silver smith at Strasburg. In 1438 he started to manufacture the printing with movable type.</p><p>In 1452 and 1456 he printed the Bible in 42 lines per page, the first printed book.</p><p><br/></p><p><strong>WHY IS HE IMPORTANT?:</strong></p><p>Gutenberg is important because he invented the printing with movable type, a primitive machine to print paper and books. She had two brothers, Manuel and Ignacio. When her dad died, since she was young, she helped her mother with the money, working.</p><p><br/></p><p>PROFESSIONAL CAREER:</p><p>IN 1909, she worked like a postal officer and, in 1922, she fought against unfair laws.</p><p>Later, in 1924, she was graduated in law and she participated in the International Federation of lawyers women, in 1929. In 1931, she was chosen deputy by de Radical party. Then, she published " Mi pecado mortal" in 1936.</p><p>She exile in 1937 and public another book.</p><p>In her Argentine exile in 1939 she published "Heroísmo criollo".</p><p>And, finally, in 1955 she went to Lausana, where she practices law, and she died in 1972.</p><p><br/></p><p>WHY IS SHE IMPORTANT?</p><p>She is important because she wants that women can vote, and the results were 161 votes in favor, 121 votes againsat and 188 abstentions.</p><p><br/></p><p><br/></p><p><br/></p><p><br/></p><p><br/></p><p><br/></p>]]></description>

They are a family of scientists.</p><p>Her mother was the renowned scientist Marie Curie, who was the first woman winning two Nobel Prizes in 2 different areas: Physics and Chemistry.</p><p>Her father was Pierre Curie, who also won the Nobel Prize in Physics.</p><p>Her sister was Eva, and she wasn’t a scientist, she was a French writer.</p><p>Irène got married with Frédéric Joliot. Her husband worked with her and they won a Nobel Prize in Chemistry.</p><p>They had two children: Hélène and Pierre. Hélène is a nuclear physicist and Pierre is a biophysicist.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p><strong>PROFESSIONAL CAREER</strong></p><p>She studied in The Cooperative. Her mother organised this school with famous academics.</p><p>She studied Physics and Mathematics at the Faculty of Science at the Sorbonne University in Paris. She couldn’t finish her studies because of the World War I.</p><p>She helped her mother in the battlefield with their invention: the Petit Curies. They were portable x-rays machines. They saved lots of soldiers. After the war, she finished her studies in 1918.</p><p>She worked as her mother’s assistant at the Radium Institute.</p><p>She met her husband there in 1925 and they worked together. They experimented with alpha rays and aluminium foil. They discovered the artificial radioactivity. They won a Nobel Prize in 1935.</p><p>She had a political career. A year later, in 1936, she was appointed Undersecretary of State for Scientific Research. Later, at Purdue University, she worked as a career guidance counselor for women and participated in aeronautical engineering programs.

Her formal education was not extensive, but her real learning was in aviation, where she made history as the first woman to fly across the Atlantic Ocean in 1932.</code></pre><p><br/></p><p>WHY IS SHE IMPORTANT?</p><pre><code> She is important because since she began her aeronautical career, she has not stopped making history: She was the first woman to make a  flight across the Atlantic Ocean.          <description><![CDATA[<p>LIFE:</p><p>She was born on the 23rd of July 1973.</p><p>She lived in Llanes as a child.</p><p>She came to Oviedo to study at the university and she lives here since then. </p><p><br/></p><p>HER FAMILY:</p><p>Her mother is Elisabeth Bulnes Estrada she was a teacher and her father Antonio Romero Rumbo he was a agronomist.</p><p>She has one sister, Cristina.</p><p>She got married to Ramiro López Sieres.</p><p>They have one daughter, Inés and two sons, Jaime and Pablo (Me).</p><p>PROFESSIONAL CAREER:</p><pre><code>She studied teaching in Padre Ossó, and while studying she volunteered in a lot of places.
Her first school was in Belmonte and her current school is San Cucao, which is in Llanera.
WHY IS SHE IMPORTANT FOR ME? 
She is important to me because she takes care of me every day, she is a kind and friendly person with a very good sense of humour, I love her very much. As a teacher, she is a hard worker and is very committed to her students.
