I personally feel the need to constantly renew the way I do didactics and I have found that the digital tool allows me to optimize the resources available, to capture and keep my students' attention high, to realize real cooperative learning without never substitute for the role of the teacher.

I believe in technology and use of computer, but I believe that it's important to help students to visualize and summarize also with a paper and a pencil.
I used flux diagrams to show that a procedure to solve a real problem is similar to a procedure to solve a math problem: I love the computational thinking. I receive students in the middle school that can be entusiast to use technology and I try to follow their interests, but also I think it's important to traine brain, to force the ability to link fenomena and data and use the logic.

As for me, there are further reasons to use IT which were not evidently outlined in the presentation. They mainly attain to metacognition and could be resumed as follows:
1) IT tools are usually percieved as "friendly stuff" by younger people, since they are mainly connected to ludic experiences in students' daily life. That is why IT tools may improve the learners' confidence about understanding Maths: the principle is "if it is a screen to show it, then anybody is able to get it!"
2) IT tools are highly socialising and they enhance communication and content sharing. This aspect is extremely motivating for students.
3) If part of a work is carried out with a computer, then students believe they have to endure less work. A misconception of this latter aspect is the only risk I can fancy.

ICT have the potential to transform fundamentally the way we learn and teach math by representing abstract mathematical concepts in many different formats (multimodal), by facilitating the collaboration and teamwork between our students (social skills), by providing instant feedback, by making individual learning feasible (personalization), by making calculations an easy task, by engaging every student to revise his or her learning outcomes and to provide feedback to other students (metacognition), by helping teachers to differentiate their instruction and deliver their lectures in a digital format (audio, video, text) easy sharable and accessible 24/7 through every digital device in and outside the school premises. However, digital learning is a relatively new field and as it said we have gone so far, a long way to digital and only a few steps to learning. Nevertheless, ICT are a set of tools which can easily enhance the traditional behaviorist teacher-centered approach where students compete one another and then are rewarded or punished. Therefore, I argue that, once again the role of the human factor in the educational scene is of a paramount importance. Poorly educated teachers on how to use in a pedagogical informed way the new technologies are the biggest challenge nowadays for the educational systems across the globe. Arguably, educational technology, like any other technology, has never had something inherently bad or good.

I think it's very important to try to incorporate digital technologies in our teaching in general and in Maths in particular. Teaching and learning cannot be the same in a fast-changing world where ICT has become the order of the day in all parts of life. I can recognize the benefits of teaching with the aid of ICT but I would like to make a few points: Can we use technology to the same extent across the age levels (i.e. at pres-school education, high schoo)?How well-prepared are we as teachers to make the most of technology in our teaching? Can we teach everything using technology or are there particular math subjects that are better facilitated with the use of ICT? Using technology doesn't make us necessarily better teachers. I think that the tools and the content to be taught must be very well selected so as not to deprive our students of such skills as collaboration, discussion, analysis synthesis, argumentation etc.

For me the main reason to use digital technologies for Math is to transform an abstract idea or concept to a concrete one. For example, when talking about volumes (a 3 dimensional object) it is hard to imagine it or visualize it in a blackboard or a paper (a 2 dimensional object). Another reason is that our current world (and the future one) are digital.
In the theme of downsides: the lack of digital skills in some teachers, their reluctance to change their teaching ways, that some schools doesn't have access to digital tools and that to include digital tools there has to be a previous and careful planning to really take advantage of them (meaning more time that sometimes is not paid).

I think that the additional value of technology is that it can help young students to get abstract ideas catching their interest.
Moreover it allows teachers to spend more time to logical and critical aspects of Maths and this is priceless.
It allows to share ideas, to review constantly your work, to work as a team even if you are not in the same place too.
But I also think that spend too much time using technologies could be dangerous because a massive use of them leave people feeling alienated.
Kids learn manipulating real things, not only imagine.
I definitetly think that a good teacher should find the right way to show his students the right use of these instruments and should integrate the use of concrete objects with virtual reality.
I love technologies and I use it at school (even if we have poor equipments), but I'm really afraid of the effects that they could have on young brains.

The use of computer technology makes traditional math lessons bright and interesting. In these lessons, each student works actively, students develop curiosity, cognitive interest. In the 21^st century students are digital natives as they grow up using technologies. They are familiar with the digital environment and they are used to work with applications. I can see that they learn better and faster using technology as it gives them the opportunity to use the skills they are good at. I sometimes observe that students are bored when the teaching happens using only the board and chalk as there is nothing hi-tech they can relate to.

The importance of calculus in Maths teaching is obsolete.
What's the meaning of being able to solve a system in two linear equations if you don't know how to solve a choice problem between to options modeled by linear equations? I think that Maths teaching should be updated, in order to stress problem solving and limiting the complexity of the calculus, since nowadays we have computers that do it.
In this perspective computers and devices help a lot. For example, I ask students to use their devices both for Physics experiments and for Maths' modeling.

In my opinion, the best model is to “blend” learning, combine technology with hands on or paper based teaching.
Students will get the most out of a lesson if technology is used only when it enhances the lesson, not dominates it. Practicing concepts by hand on paper is irreplaceable in the math classroom. It’s not only a more effective means of showing the work, it is also more effective for student retention. The connections the brain makes when the hands are writing is stronger than it is with technology.

Advantages:
When well-used, they enable meaningful learnind; students can interact with more interest in seeking by knowledge by constructing their teaching learning process.

Disadvantages:

Improper use due to lack of training and/or information of teachers; excessive use of technology, very appealing to students, leads them to reject traditional education; the student’s tendency to accommodate and conforms to passively receive what the technology offers him.

I think that computers used well are a great tool in teaching math but I do find it hard to imagine only using them and not teaching computation without a major shift in the mindset of the government and curriculum writers as well. We are expected to have students that can compute a certain amount of material by hand and standardized tests assess this also. A curriculum shift or mindset switch from people with more power in how math is taught and assessed would help to be able to use technology more in the way that he says. I do think that there are lots of great ways that we can use the technology now and that there needs to be more real world math put into our way of teaching though.

Digital tehnologies

My teaching was much easier last year when I had the opportunity to use smart board. I taught about circle and parallel and vertical lines. Because of the tools on Smart I could change and draw lines, circulars, radius etc. Much quicker and because of the possibilities od changing colours they could see many examples in short time. The rest of the time I could use for correcting individualy my students in drawing, measuring and holding their drawing suplies.

They are certainly a great way to attract students' attention, motivate them and also to encourage those pupils who learn a lot through images, colours. I think that digital technologies can increase students' interest in maths especially if we use it ,as well as to facilitate calculations, to understand how formulas, processes, and mathematical tools are used in the real world. It is useful for students to solve biomedical problems with the computer within the Statistical Inference, collect statistical data through Excel, or perform a statistical survey by visiting the official ISTAT Italian website for example.

However, overloading of technologies may disorientate from the objectives posed by the teachers during a math lesson. Technologies can influence both learners and teachers way to approach Maths lessons and learning in general. They help teachers to prepare more appealing, interactive and dynamics lessons (every day you can create something new and that's inspiring!). Technologies help students to easily understand and memorize new subjects. I think this is amazing.

Furthermore, collaboration among teachers of different subjects is greatly improved by technologies.

It's inspiring and I really feel entusiastic thinking about all the opportunity technology can give to math teaching. In one of my class we have a IWB but in the other one we have nothing to use. That's something make me sad about the opportunity the students of that class will lost. I try to help by taking the projector and a pc, but isn't simple to use and isn't the same than the IWB.
Obviously we can't simply use technology with old methods or only to make children enjoy the vision. It's the way they frequently use technology at home but can't be the way choosen by an educational institution.

In my opinion digital technologies in Maths are very useful, not only because in this way Maths should be more interesting, but also because, with their use, some topics are better understood.
I also agree with Wolfram when he says that students should be able to solve real problems, and develop reasoning skills.
However, I think that calculation, not very difficult, are important too, and that it doesn't exclude the others.
Otherwise it would be like saying that children don't need to learn multiplication tables because there are calculators.

Think about our students, they were born in technological era and we must speak their language to be understanding, to be interesting, to make a pleasant Math. No one of Math teachers use in excess technology, so couldn't be dangerous for our students.

I really like Conrad Wolfram's ideas. Ithink Math is much more than calculating too. Unfortunately curricula and exams need calculating. It's really boring and frustrating for students and also for some teacher like me. It's a great problem for pupils with special needs.

Digital technologies are useful tools to teach Maths but, in my opinion, the basis of learning Maths should be manipulation and play. When students are young, technology is also used, but much more manipulation.

All my students use technologies in their everyday life, using them in the classroom is only the next logical step. Unfortunately I have to prepare the exams, where the students need to be able calculate, without any help from outside. Therefor I see myself bound by the curricula, and I use technologies with moderation.

It have to be the natural and logical step which will unable students to have all the benefits that were mentioned in the prezi and Conrad Wolfram's video. I do believe that tech is important. My subject is not Maths but Technology (Yes, in Italy we've such a thing...). But I force my students to draw tech drawings with pencil and sheets. I think that the wrong message we could pass them is that with technologies everything is easy and they don't have to study anymore. An exhmaple. When in the music we had the Grunge, every pseudo musician thought that it wasn't necesssesary to study music anymore to be a good performer. to be effective and to have success. That was a fake and it took some years to gain this awareness. Following this I firmly sure that tech will be the future and it's already, but I believe that our students cannot forget how to write, how to make counts without a calculator, write without a corrector and so on.

I use the new technologies in the classroom and agree with what was shown. But, as we have said, we can not work only these means there must be others that allow students to discover, to move, to get involved with the project, with the activity. But it is very important that the use of new technologies allows us to interact with students and students interacting with something that we would otherwise not be able to show.

I have enjoyed the video, and I mainly agree with the speaker: we should not spend too time in teaching calculating. But as he said, basics as arithmetics are useful for quick estimation, and I add it is useful for a sort of exercise for mind/neurons too. Exercising helps to automate calculation and to make it quicker. First lessons in my classrooms always try to show the utility of maths in everyday life and real world, and I also try to show how beautiful maths is. So we find that calculating can be useful and funny, and we have computers and calculators to make life easier. To students I teach usually the basics of Geogebra, for example to view the transformation from a polygon to a circle (like in the video): students get really excited about the discovery! So computers are useful, but in my region not everybody owns one, and not every school has enough pc for students, that means we have to adapt...

I am one of those who worries about ‘the basics’ but can see the argument that we don’t need computational skills in a world of computers. I can see that using computational tools allows us to focus more on concepts and ideas and allows us to use real world, ‘not nice’ numbers. However, I am caught in a system which still uses exams for assessment, so need to find a balance. Sadly, in my system, they have reintroduced calculator – free testing, meaning that my students must still do some problems by hand.
