For others, this structure gives them a foreign feeling, as if they were in someplace else as this structure is not like any other. Alongside, to give a brief background, The Ruins is inspired by a façade in Carnegie Hall of the New York City. More importantly, this is to be classified as an Italianate architecture consisting of neo-Romanesque columns, which is mostly seen in Greek Architecture. To be more specific, this is also known as the Taj Mahal of the said city. We see here the inspiration of variation; thus, making use of space, pattern, and form. Its breathtaking feeling after taking a good look at the structure is truly life-changing. From its oversized steel bars, mixture of concrete for construction, wall-finishing made from egg whites mixed with cement – surely The Ruins is one would never forget in his life. 

Out of the 4 systems of buildings discussed in class, I would have to say that the Ruins is categorized as a Column System, which will be further discussed later.

To further discuss this into the principles of design, there is a 4-tiered fountain seen surrounding the mansion. A simborio, also known as a chimney, was used as a vent in the old-days for Don Mariano Lacson. The Veranda Lighting “The pipes used to channel the electric wires, embedded in the ceiling, are the same ones used today. Note the rings beside the ceiling lights which used to hold the chains of chandeliers” (Reyes, 2009). The type of floors used throughout this structure is wood, starting from the main entrance all the way to the end of the dining room. The Belvedere, in return, serves as the windows of the structure which gives visitors the beautiful sunset view of the city. The shell-inspired decoration is the same décor used in New England in the homes of ship captains back in the day.

Moreover, there is structural balance and symmetry represented by the columns of The Ruins. This also emanates the life of hacienderos back in the days. There is also a sense of emphasis through its material, particularly, the rings beside the ceiling lights. Its evident rhythmic combination of solids and voids, concave and convex and light shadow - is what adds up to its overall beauty. 

Relating this with its design plan, there is a long central aisle all throughout the structure. 

In conclusion, the structure of The Ruins, is not merely for aesthetic pleasing of the eye. More importantly, it serves as a representation of what the life of hacienderos were back in the days. This, in return, out of several grand mansions back in the day – serves as a historical structure of the Lacsons.
