- Teaching students to read single and multisyllabic words explicitly, systematically and sequentially, I would start by introducing phonics concepts in a structured way, starting with simple patterns and moving to more complex patterns. For example, we would begin with basic consonant- vowel-consonant words before moving to more complex patterns. Incorporating multisensory techniques – like tracing the letters while sounding out the letter – helps my students with different learning styles grasp the concepts more easily.

Group 1! Variations in dialects and speech patterns often involve combining, removing, or modifying aspects of the "standard" sounds in a language. This can create additional barriers to a student's ability to recognize and manipulate the phonemes, as well as difficulty in being understood by members of the same language group.

"Phonics instruction lends itself to multi-sensory teaching techniques, because these techniques can be used to focus children’s attention on the sequence of letters in printed words. As such, including manipulatives, gestures, and speaking and auditory cues increases students’ acquisition of phonics skills. An added benefit is that multisensory techniques are quite motivating and engaging to many children."

Group 2! The key is to create opportunities for students to actively engage with texts through both reading and writing. This helps them make meaning and communicate their understanding effectively. These practices help students process and apply what they read, making them more effective communicators and critical thinkers. As research shows, when reading and writing are integrated thoughtfully, students benefit academically and are better prepared for future success in both educational and real-world settings.

Engaging with text requires active thinking and reflecting, which enhances comprehension; therefore, activating and making use of cognitive resources can enable understanding of texts."

2nd resource: Students in the PreK and Kindergarten class where I work keep "Life Journals".

Different ways of speaking can make it easier or harder for kids to learn sounds in words. If a child speaks differently at home than how they’re taught at school, they might find it harder to hear or work with certain sounds. This can make reading and spelling more difficult. But if a child is used to hearing different ways of speaking, it can also help them notice sounds better. - Grp 2

Multisensory practices help by engaging multiple senses, which strengthens neural pathways and improves memory retention. When students use more than one sense, like hearing, seeing, and touching, it creates stronger connections between sounds and their corresponding symbols (A,B,C...) This makes it easier for students to remember phonemic patterns and recognize how sounds are represented in writing.

Digital Promise. (n.d.). Multisensory phonics.
