This line is powerful to me because it reminds me of how much Salva has already been through.  The hardest thing he's ever done is trek through the Akobo desert, but he's also been through so much more.  For example, he had to run away from his school during the attack and he has been without his family for a month now. This line is powerful to me because (One of) Salva's closest and maybe last relative was just tied to a tree, robbed and shot in the head three times. Despite of the problems the group and Salva had gone through, having to lose a family member, losing a new friend on the journey, crossing the arid desert, and danger everywhere they go is hard enough, but another problem in their hands is good enough. The reason that Salva made it that far is because is belief in his family alive and his uncle with encourage him to move. Even though his friend died without a chance to defend himself. Salva was trembling. even in the midst of his fear, he realized that for the first time on the trip, it was a good thing to be the youngest and the smallest: the men would not be inserted in his clothes. when the men had finished their looting, they picked up uncles gun. then they walked to the tree where uncle was tied up. maybe they will leave us alone now that they robbed us, Salva thought. As Salva watched, one of the men aimed his gun at uncle. three shots rang out. then the men ran away.  pg. 63

this line was important to me in the book because when they had just got done talking about finding his parents when his uncle go back to war, he was going to look for them and he promised Salva that he would, and now that he had just fond hope and now that hope is gone and he doesn't even know if he is going to find his family any more and know he is just hopeless and he has nobody anymore.

This Line made me think he is going trough a hard time and may never see his family again and I could feel the emotion striking me after reading that little section made me think about how fortunate we are to be in a free country not having to worry about wars a much as they do and we have roofs over our heads and food in front of us clean water .It is sad thinking that this is still happening today. In our world and there is almost no way we can fix it. This line is powerful to me because Salva's best friend was killed by a lion and Salva felt like a fist was squeezing his heart. if that were me in Salva's place I would feel like that too. Salva had a rough life and to make a friend that was like him made him feel a lot better, (as I said Salva's life was already rough) and then loose his best friend by a lion! This line is the most powerful in my opinion because Salva loved his uncle dearly and his uncle stated that he would protect Salva, but unexpectedly, he was killed. This has a big impact on the story because Salva's uncle was a big part of the story, protecting Salva, and promising if any sign of Salva's parents was found, Salva would be notified as soon as possible.
