If government funds had to be spent on New Deal relief efforts, all of that money should have gone towards things that solved immediate emergencies or made a lasting difference: food relief, infrastructure, economic stimulus, etc. There is no reason tax payer money should have been spent on things like art and music. Tie your opnion to evidence from course materials.
- Place your post near the bottom prompt and include whether you agree or disagree in the title (example: Agree - Wade Merrill)

Name: The Farmer's Kitchen
Artist: Ivan Albright
Description: I chose this picture because it is very powerful. The woman's hands are swollen, she looks tired, and wore out, but yet she is still working in the kitchen to provide for the household. During this time women worked hard to provide food for their household. They cooked, cleaned, and looked after everyone under that roof. They often had to work in the fields as well. They had long, tiring days.

I do agree that tax payer money should have went to essential items rather than art and entertainment. People were suffering from the depression. Households needed food, water, and shelter. Men and women needed jobs. While entertainment could have provided some jobs, many people were still without jobs. Many families needed work to keep food on the table and clothes on their bodies.

Name: Tenement Flats
Artist: Millard Sheets
Description: I chose this picture because I think it is a realistic picture of the many jobs the women had throughout the Great Depression. As you can see the women were tending to the laundry and still caring for the home. This picture also shows a good image to me of community life, which was very important in this era. It looks to me as many families were living together, which was discussed in the movie on "The Dust Bowl". Many families became one larger family as they moved.

I do agree that funds the government had for new deal relief efforts should have gone towards things that made a lasting difference. Although the art is enjoyable and important for history, it not crucial. It's not needed for survival, as food, shelter, ect, is. The total of $1,184,000 that was paid for artwork is asinine to me. There was much more important issues that money could have gone towards.

Name: Somewhere in America
Artist: Robert Brackman
Description: I chose this piece of art work because I think it speaks volumes as to the time period it was taken in. The Great Depression was a very trying time and this photo shows the hardships many faced in that time period. The girl in this photo appears to be sad and she is clutching her teddy bear because she is fearful for the future. She knows the great depression is a trying time and there are many uncertainties. She looks slightly malnourished and hungry which would make sense because the Great Depression was a hard time and hit many families very hard.

I agree that the tax payers should spend their money on long lasting essential items such as food relief, economic stimulus, etc. These important long lasting things really can make a difference in the community and have a long lasting effect on the world. People suffering in the world from the Great Depression could really have benefited from the $1, 184,000 that was spent on the art work.
