1. Basically it is a struggle over a family heirloom between two siblings, which is a piano carved with images of their African Ancestors that was crafted by their enslaved grandfather. The story takes place in 1930's Pittsburg during the Great Depression and also black migration from the South to the North. This migration began to stabilize during these times to create new black communities which later became victims of a failing economy.

3. An important symbol of the story is the piano.its very important to Berniece and boy willie, because its a part of the family history.

Dominique N.
History/the past is very prevalent in the book. Lots of recalling the past of their families and the history of the piano. They make a point that the older people know less about their parents because back then the parents didn't want the children to know how they suffered. The things that are reminiscent of the past (the piano) are very important to them. It's ironic that they are selling a piece of their history to gain back another piece of their history (their land).

Post Liminal Rites - to achieve their ultimate goal (becoming "new") by selling the piano and buying that piece of land.
Trying to break the chain of poverty and try and have something for themselves.

Austin Salyers, Daniel

The family is divided by the piano, as a liminal space between the past and the future. Boy willie and other men in the family wish to progress the family by selling the piano for land. Berniece wishes to hold on to the piano as a link to the past. She values the history of the piano and the efforts of members of her family like grandfather Willie boy who stole the piano. Berniece wishes for her daughter, Maretha, to not have her live binded by the past, but to live anew and only to remember her culture and not live by it.
