Miss Susan Cushing received a cardboard box in the mail, that contained freshly severed human ears inside. The local detective asked Sherlock Holmes if he would like to help with the case, and he agreed. After some investigation on Holmes' part, it was determined that the ears were not a pair and that the box was meant for Sarah Cushing, Miss Susan Cushing's sister who had lived with her until quite recently. Mary, the youngest sister of Miss Susan Cushing, had a husband named Jim Browner, who worked on a ship and had a drinking problem. Before Sarah lived with Susan, she had lived with Mary and Jim for a while. Soon Sarah began to come onto Jim, and when he rejected her, she became very angry with him and set to sabotage his relationship with Mary. Before long Sarah had seeded doubts in Mary's head and made her not trust Jim anymore, and the couple began to grow apart. Soon Mary began to fall for Alec FairBairn, a friend of Sarah's. Once Jim realized what was happening, he was extremely angry at Mary, Sarah, and Alec, and he told Sarah that if Alec ever stepped foot in his house again, that he would send Sarah one of his ears as a "keepsake". After that Sarah left and moved in with Susan. Then Jim found out the Mary was still seeing Alec behind his back and when he confronted them, he threatened to kill her if she ever saw him again, and Alec ran. After some time had passed and things had cooled down, Jim was set to go to sea on the boat he worked on, the May Day, but due to some technical difficulties the departure had been delayed so he decided to go surprise his wife, only to find her with Alec FairBairn. He followed them to a train station and then to a place where they hired a boat to go onto the water in. Jim followed them onto the water, caught up to them about a mile from shore, and proceeded to bash Alec's head in with his walking cane. He then beat Mary to death with his stick after she cried out for Alec and clung to his body. After they had both died, Jim used his knife to cut off an ear from both of them, and then sunk their boat with them in it. He paddled back to shore, cleaned himself up, packaged the ears, and got back onto the May Day. Where the next day, while stopped at a port, he sent the gruesome package to Sarah Cushing at Miss Susan Cushing's residence, due to him not knowing that Sarah no longer lived there with her sister. Which is how Susan received the package instead of Sarah. After some instruction from Holmes the local detective, G. Lestrade, arrested Jim Browner after he returned to port the following day for the murder of his wife and of Alec FairBairn. Once in police custody Jim Browner gave a full confession to the police, and explained that he hadn't been able to sleep since the murders because he kept seeing their horrified faces every time he closed his eyes.

Jenny - This story was definitely very interesting, I wasn't sure what to expect in the beginning except for another boring old story. However, I enjoyed this story and found it weird that someone would have sent a pair of severed ears to someone. I like how detailed the story was. I disliked that Jim resulted to Murdering them instead of just getting a divorce.

Justice - I like how odd the story was. I've watched a lot of Forensic Files and it reminded me a lot of something you would see on one of the episodes. Something I disliked was how Sarah came onto Mary’s husband. I know there had to be a story, but that’s your sister. It was stupid and gross. I could NEVER see myself doing that. But I also agree with Jenny. I never understood why people killed their spouse after finding out they are cheating or something similar instead of just getting a divorce.

Lillian - The story has an incredible way of keeping the reader on the edge of their seat. Everything I’ve read from this story keeps me intrigued. It’s hit after hit with something new and more interesting with the case. In a way, the beginning of Jim’s story makes you feel a bit bad for him, but that quickly went downhill as soon as he mentioned murder, and when he became abusive. I didn’t like the way Sarah kind of started to treat Jim in a weird way. AS A SISTER IN LAW. Kind of weird. Also, If Jim knew there was something wrong with Mary, or he noticed that she didn’t have an interest in him anymore, it would have been easier to get a divorce.

Jillian - I really liked how detailed the story was and how the fact that it was told from Watson's point of view kept the reader from understanding everything and on the edge of their seats until the very end. I think it was an interesting perspective for it to be told from and that it really added to the story. I did not like however, the way that as the story went on Jim kept on becoming more angry and abusive, until he got to the point where he threatened murder. I also did not like how as he gave the police his statement he was completely unapologetic for murdering his wife and another man. He says that he cannot be punished more than he has already punished himself, but that's not remorse for his actions, he's only regretting the guilt he feels and the nightmares he's gotten from his horrific crime.
