It often happens that students tell us they do not understand maths and are not able to solve problems. In my opinion this is caused by gaps never filled in that led them to a delay in the development of logical processes. As a consequence they reject this subject since it makes them fill incompetents. Every problem is a challenge lost at the beginning and their self-esteem decreases. We should keep in our mind these keywords: Real life, Time, ICT Tools, amaze, self-esteem.
We should catch student's attention with amazing examples, connections to other subjects, always referring to real life. Our means have to be new technologies since our students are really good at using these tools and this could be the key to push them towards Maths. On the other hand we should take into account their own time for comprehension as much as possible so no arguments will be missed. Finally we should grow their self-esteem constantly setting off their improvements driving them to the next goal.

Would you want this information and how would you use it? What kind of activities do your students like? What communities do they come from? What are topics they are interested in? What always works, what never works with them? And how do you take all these aspects into account in your lesson planning? 

In my opinion, personalizing lessons is a winning move. Take into account our students' interests focus their attention on maths. I often tell my students we are playing with maths so look at this subject as a game. These kind of activities are just those ones our students like and making them learning arguments by playing games always works. Identify a challenge or problem for students to solve where they have to use a certain set of Maths skills. Make sure to identify which type of Maths skills are required by the students.
 
I love the idea to connect math to real life so I do every time I can. Once I gave my students the planimetry of the floor where their classroom is and I asked them to identify it and, considering the scale drawing, to calculate its real area. I used the Archimedes's Stomachion to introduce the subject of fractions and I continued making connections to the stained glass windows of churches. My students are always so enthusiastic for this kind of activities because it's like a game for them .
