The most powerful (magistrate) is directly above all his subordinates and the subordinates are slightly below each other indicating that there was a slight power difference that wasn't as obvious as the magistrate's. William Rowe's book largely influenced this map as it shows how powerful the magistrate is in comparison to his subordinates. Rowe explained that the magistrate has 4 categories of personnel, Clerks, sub beuraucratic, private secretaries and village headmen. It was made clear that there was a significant power difference between clerks and village headmen. The respect and recognition given to them by the magistrate varied greatly as explained by Rowe. There was some limited explaination in The Death of Woman Wang of which of the magistrate's categories the characters fit.
