The slurs that his friends call him demonstrate how they only see him as "Black" or "Indian" and not as the person he is. They see him only as the negative connotations enforced to him and his race, overlooking the fact that just like them, Sunil is still a person. It also shows how people hyper fixate on what they want to see, in this case race, only able to view what they believe are mistakes and imperfections, unable to see him for himself. This shows observer bias, only searching for what they believe is true and ignoring the aspects that directly contradict their belief.

In the beginning of the story, Sunil started to recognize the fact that his name was different and that he would be bullied for it. It wasn't bad at first but towards the middle of the story it got worse. Students at school call him racial slurs, this has a bad impact on his mental health. In the middle Sunil is in a really dark place and is questioning whether he should change his name to Neill. After a meaningful talk with his Mother, he accepts the fact that his name is different and views it as a good thing. He finds the significance in his name and comes to terms with it.

"I didn't worry so much about my name anymore, no matter how people said it I didn't wince". This relates to the end.

"I just want to fit in" This relates to the middle of the story when Sunil wants to change his name.

In the beginning of the story 'Sticks & Stones', Sunil lives in Australia and is in a racist environment, having kids calling him racial slurs for being Indian. Sunil is influenced by the kids, and doesn't want to accept his culture because of the kids being abusive of his heritage. This causes Sunil to try and 'wash the black off him', but is not successful. He questions why he is the only one of his friends with and Indian name and tries to change it. This makes him ask his mum why he has an Indian name and she fails to give a good response or reason.

Sunil is ashamed that he is Indian and does not accept his Indian name because it is different to the other kids. He believed his name is silly and hard to pronounce, so he tried to change it and have a more "normal" Australian name. However, when his mother found out about his "new name", he was forced to confess his feelings towards his real name: "I hate it... it's too hard to say... it's too Indian!" This demonstrates his disgust in his Indian heritage. But then his mother tells him the real meaning of his name, that it means "Lord Shiva, God of Destruction." This completely shifts Sunil's views on his heritage to be more positive and accepting.
