Austrian School System

Austrian School System

Hello from Austria,

we would like to inform you about our Austrian education system. We differ between compulsory school attendance and compulsory training.
Compulsory school attendance was firstly introduced by empress Maria Theresia in 1774 and was slightly changed over the years.
Compulsory training was introduced in 2017.

Compulsory school attendance starts at the age of six. In Austria the first step is the so called „Volksschule“ also known as primary school. After four years of learning the basics for subjects like Maths, German, and a tiny bit of English, we move onto the “Mittelschule (MS)” or “allgemeinbildende höhere Schule Unterstufe (AHS Unterstufe)”, which is like middle school. In these next four years in AHS or MS we expand our previous learned knowledge and study new subjects like, biology, chemistry, physics and history.
After being in school for eight years, there is only one compulsory year left. If you want to do an apprenticeship, you can choose between going to one year of “Poly (=Polytechnische Schule)”, or continue to “AHS Oberstufe”, or visit a “BHS (Berufsbildende höhere Schulen)”.

After going to school for nine years the compulsory trainings starts, you have the option to either do an apprenticeship or continue to go to a AHS/BHS and get your Matura/degree.

Most apprenticeships last for three years, where you collect working experience as well as being able to work at your workplace directly after. In the time of an apprenticeship, you will receive money for working, but you normally won’t have a degree or Matura.

In AHS you strengthen your knowledge in all subjects leading to the Matura (the final exam in Austria), which allows you to visit universities and get a better degree/education.

BHS is more specific than AHS and you will finish with a degree but it lasts for five instead of four years.

All of these options are completely free in Austria but mandatory.
Your performance in any type of school will be judged by a teacher and grades can vary from 1 (Sehr Gut) being the best to 5 (Nicht Genügend) being the worst grade.

After you have received your Matura, you can decide to go on universities, which are also free.

Hello,

we would like to present some typical Austrian traditions to you.

Especially as Christians, we celebrate Christmas a lot. On the 24th of December we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. On this special day most Christians go to church and have a family dinner afterwards. The main course of the dinner is often a fondue or a raclette. The highlight of Christmas is opening the presents, which are placed under a Christmas tree. Here in Austria children believe that angels bring their presents to them.

Another religious tradition is to celebrate Easter. We believe in the resurrection of Jesus, which happens on the day of Easter. The Easter bunny hides eggs and sweet treats for the children. A little bit surprising is that the easter bunny is bringing the eggs instead of a religious figure.

Besides of these religious traditions, we would love to introduce you to some traditional Austrian meals.

The most popular one is the Kaiserschmarrn. The dough consist of milk, egg and flour. It is fried in a pan and often eaten with sugar and apple mousse.

Dumplings with all kind of flavours are also a part of the Austrian cuisine.

Spinatknödel is a spinach dumpling from Tyrol that is usually served with a salad. After they have been boiled, the dumplings are traditionally drizzled with melted butter and sprinkled with grated cheese.

Kaspressknödeln are Austrian cheese dumplings originating from Tyrol. Although people refer to them as dumplings, they are actually not cooked in water, but fried in a pan and they don't have the typical shape of a ball. They are either served in a broth or used in a variety of salads.

These are some of our typical traditional foods. Maybe you could let us know about some of your traditions as well?

Tyrolean stereotypes

Hey there! Many people think that a typical Tyrolean man is wearing Lederhosen and the typical Tyrolean woman always wears a dirndl. This is just one out of many stereotypes that foreigners think are true. Most of them are not true at all and kind of far-fetched. So, to clear things up, we want to discuss a few examples further. Firstly, most Tyroleans do own traditional clothing, but it is only meant to be worn on special occasions that require more than normal clothing. We don't just walk around in them all the time. Another stereotype is that Tyroleans speak Austrian, but actually, a language called "Austrian" does not exist. We speak German just like a few other countries do. We do have a Tyrolean dialect, but that does not make it a new language. Another false assumption is that every Tyrolean citizen can yodel and step dance. Just like most stereotypes, this is not true as well. Yodeling is a hobby. So, just like every other hobby, you can learn it if you want to, but if you don't, you don't. As expected, it is the same for step dancing.

Hello,

we would like to present our favourite free time activities in Innsbruck during summer.

To start off strong, we love going for a hike in the alps. The mountains in Innsbruck are stunningly beautiful. The nature is very impressive and it provides a huge variety of plants and animals. When you go there early enough, you may even see a deer or a rabbit.

Next up, when we are not in the mood for hiking in the mountains, there is also the possibility to go swimming in one of the many lakes. We prefer going to the Baggersee, since you can get the best ice cream in Innsbruck there.

Everywhere in Innsbruck you can find many grass areas, where teens enjoy tasty food and play with either a frisbee or a volleyball. A lot of them also study for school or read a book while enjoying the sun. One of the best places to meet up with friends to just relax is “Schloss Ambras”. It’s a historically important place and you can find a stunning waterfall next to the castle.

Innsbruck also provides opportunities for young people to practice sports like volleyball, tennis, soccer or basketball. You just need some friends and a ball to start playing. Usually, it’s not too crowded, so it’s quite enjoyable.

Of course there are also indoor activities you could do or clubs to join, but we prefer going outside when the weather is good.

Best wishes,

S.,K.

Austrians as English language learners

As you may be aware, English is not an official language in Austria. However, due to its status as an international language, it is taught as our first foreign language. Thanks to our reformed educational system, students begin learning English in elementary school. English remains a core subject throughout most of our academic journey, with some schools specializing in English language instruction. At our school, we have two to four tests every year, depending on the class you are in. In order to succeed, students are required to master different competencies such as reading, writing, speaking and English in use. Every student must complete each skill positively to pass the class and advance to the next academic year. At the finals we typically graduate at a B2 language level.

Education is a big factor, but the heavy use of social media also plays a significant role in improving English skills among young people. With English content all over social platforms, we're exposed to the language daily. In our opinion this is a reason why younger generations generally speak a bit better English than older ones.

Griaß enk!

We would like to tell you about activities teenagers like to do in Tirol.

A lot of teenagers like to do sports like skiing, swimming and hiking because we have a lot of beautiful mountains and lakes as you can see in the pictures. We love to meet our friends and do activities together, like camping or taking a walk. There are not that many things to do in Innsbruck. But we do have cinemas you can go to and shopping malls. We also have a lake in Innsbruck called Baggersee and a lot of teenagers like to spend their time there even in winter. We also really like going out on the weekends not only in Innsbruck but in other villages too or going to concerts. A lot of teenagers in our age also already have their driving license so they like to go on drives with their friends or go to other cities on the weekends. In winter we also like to go to the Christmas market, drink “Glühwein”, eat “Kiachl” and in summer we have an amusement park where you can ride the roller coaster and play games. What do teenagers like to do in your city?

Best regards,

Greta and Kathi

The Ursulinen school building is an architectural masterpiece. The school was constructed from 1971 to 1979 and designed by the architect Josef Lackner. It isn‘t a classic Austrian building and features a lot of unusual architectural elements like triangular shapes, green carpet floors and exposed concrete. Our classrooms all look alike and can fit around 30 students. They are structured like a honeycomb with large windows on either side, which I personally find great, but sadly you can’t open them. To prevent bad air circulation and to avoid the heat in summer, all the classrooms are equipped with air conditioning. Additionally, every class is provided with its own projectorand blackboard. The „Pausenebene“, were we spend our breaks, is the central element of the school that features great passive lighting through big windows located around. Our school has multiple Sport facilities for various sports. Inside the building we have a big, heatedswimming pool that fits 20 students easily. In the heart of the school there is a big gym that can be separated into two smaller gyms by a partition wall. Then we also have a corner that is filled with Ping-Pong and table football tables. On the East side of the school there is the „Ursulinen Arena “, a big football field with artificial turf. In the west there are beach volleyball, basketball and handball fields to play these sports outside in good weather.

What are the best features of your school building?

Tyrolean culture

Servus and नमस्ते,

As part of our collaboration, we would like to share some things about the Austrian or to be more specific, Tyrolean culture.

On of the more remarkable parts of our culture is the music. With traditional folk songs that include yodeling and instruments like the alphorn or the accordion, Tyrol has created a rich musical tradition.

The architecture in Tyrol also reflects its history and culture. Typical farmhouses made from wood are found all around the countryside and are also often used as hotels for tourists to stay in and experience the culture first-hand.

Tyrolean cuisine is characterized by delicious, savory dishes often involving potatoes or different variations of dumplings with the most famous one being the “Tiroler Knödl”. Besides that, there are also plenty of delicious desserts, like the “Apfelstrudl”, a kind of pastry made from thin sheets of dough filled with apple jam, raisins and different spices like cinnamon.

Furthermore, traditional festivals also play an important role in our culture. Whether it’s the “Tiroler Schützenfest”, where local gunmen showcase their skills or the thrilling “Krampusläufe” during the wintertime, these events bring the community together and let the people connect with their culture.

Overall Tyrolian culture is a colorful mix of history, nature and lived tradition which attracts many tourists worldwide. Hopefully this will give you an idea of what the culture is all about.

We are very excited about our partnership and hope to hear from you.

Cheers!

(Here are some links for you if you are interested in how some of the traditions look in real life):

Krampuslauf: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1nPVF_ewY5Q

Folk songs: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W3-X2RedOt4

Dear fellow students from across the globe!

We wanted to give you a short introduction to what our curriculum, our day-to-day life, and our building look like. In this post, I’ll try to give you a perspective on various aspects of our building, its architecture, and its layout.

Upon entering the building, one is greeted not only by a short flight of stairs leading to a huge, sorry, I meant absolutely enormous floor consisting of various areas I’ll refer to later on, but also by an elevator, of which I’m more than certain of, no student in recorded history has ever seen its interior. Principal, if you read this, prove me wrong.

In one of our pictures, one can observe the interesting architecture we owe to the famous architect of our school, Josef Lackner. The triangular and hexagonal shapes that make up our school are also what sets our building apart. Name another school with such interesting architecture - I’ll wait. The use of carpet is also kind of unique. Remember the gigantic area I’ve mentioned? This is where students usually eat lunch or hang out between classes. Some of them also get work done there, I, however, believe this to be myth dating back to the 17th century. Speaking of which - at the end of the 17th century the first school belonging to the Ursulinen Catholic order, Ursulinenorden, was founded in Innsbruck, Austria. All of these things and much more define our school and make it so much more than just a school.

We also have a volleyball court, a soccer court, a running track and multi-purpose courts (one could use these for basketball, soccer, tennis, handball, or volleyball, for example). Going back inside, there’s also a room dedicated to performing plays and on the opposite end of the building a room with a bigger than usual projector screen, which is often used for showing movies and the alike.

What do you think about our building? What’s something special about your school? We’d love to hear about your school, too!

After every class,

we have a 5-minute break to change classrooms if needed and prepare the needed utensils.

Some of the lessons we have are, for example, learning a foreign language (Italian, Latin,

French), which you need to choose in fifth grade. Our school also has a large variety of sport

fields such as a soccer-field, beach-volleyball court and a swimming pool. Generally, we finish

school at 01:30 p.m. after six classes, but two times a week we end the school day at 03:45 p.m.

If we have lessons in the afternoon, we get a 30-minutes lunch break in which a lot of students

go to the many supermarkets in our surroundings.

Later in the afternoon, we usually do our homework and study for exams and tests. Afterwards,

you have time for your hobbies and some free time to relax and meet friends. In Austria we

usually dine all together and then go to bed between 10:00 and 12:00 p.m.

We hope you have now got a better idea of our school day and we would like to hear about yours.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Best regards,

Anna & Sara

Hey there, I am Nitya Mehra from Mount Abu Public School.

One of the most commendable aspects of Mount Abu Public School is its dedication to aligning its educational practices with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). By integrating SDGs into its curriculum and extracurricular activities, the school is not only imparting knowledge, but also instilling a sense of responsibility towards our environment and society in its students. In doing so, our school is actively contributing to the global effort towards sustainable development and environmental conservation.

Moreover, what I feel is the school's emphasis on nurturing 21st-century skills such as critical thinking, creativity, communication, collaboration, and technological literacy is very innovative. In today's rapidly evolving world, these skills are indispensable for success, and Mount Abu Public School is ensuring that its students are well-equipped to thrive in the dynamic global landscape.

Furthermore, I love Mount Abu Public School's commitment to promoting global citizenship among its students. By exposing them to diverse cultures, perspectives, and global issues, the school is fostering empathy, cultural competence, and a sense of belonging to a larger global community. This emphasis on global citizenship is crucial in preparing students to navigate the complexities of our interconnected world and become responsible, compassionate global leaders.

Nestled in my memories is my school, a diverse tapestry of cultures and ideas. Alongside my peers, teachers, and exchange students, it's become a second family—a place where bonds are forged and understanding is cultivated. But it's more than just a community; it's a force for change. Through initiatives aligned with Sustainable Development Goals, we're committed to making a positive impact, locally and globally. Recently, we established a Rotary club, deepening our dedication to service and leadership. Meanwhile, student clubs ignite passions and drive innovation, from environmental advocacy to debating critical issues. In these hallways, every encounter is an opportunity for growth and connection. My school is not just a building; it's a beacon of unity and possibility. As I venture into the world, I carry with me the lessons learned and the spirit of service fostered within its walls. It's a place I'll always cherish—a home where hearts and minds converge in pursuit of a brighter future.

~Chitali Malhotra

Mount Abu Public School, situated in the heart of Rohini, Delhi, stands not only as an educational institution but as a beacon of holistic development, global engagement, and social responsibility. As a student of Mount Abu, I have witnessed firsthand how the school transcends conventional boundaries to provide its students with opportunities ranging from local to international platforms, fostering diplomacy, promoting Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and nurturing academic excellence.

One of the hallmarks of Mount Abu Public School is its commitment to providing students with exposure to a wide array of opportunities, from local competitions to international exchanges. The school actively encourages participation in various events, competitions, and programs, allowing students to showcase their talents and hone their skills on both national and international stages. Recently, the school embarked on a pioneering Taiwan exchange program, fostering diplomatic ties and cultural exchange between students of Mount Abu and their counterparts in Taiwan. This initiative not only broadened our perspectives but also instilled in us a sense of global citizenship and cultural understanding.

Furthermore, Mount Abu is deeply invested in promoting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with a particular emphasis on eradicating hunger and achieving zero hunger. Through innovative programs like Roti Bank, the school actively engages students in community service initiatives aimed at providing nutritious meals to the underprivileged. By actively participating in Roti Bank, students learn the value of empathy, compassion, and social responsibility, contributing towards the larger goal of creating a more equitable society.

In addition to extracurricular pursuits, Mount Abu places a strong emphasis on academic excellence, offering a comprehensive curriculum that caters to the diverse needs and interests of students. The school's faculty comprises experienced educators who are dedicated to nurturing the intellectual curiosity and academic growth of every student. Through a blend of traditional teaching methods and modern approaches, Mount Abu ensures that students receive a well-rounded education that prepares them for the challenges of the 21st century.

In conclusion, Mount Abu Public School transcends the traditional role of an educational institution by providing students with a holistic learning experience that extends beyond the confines of the classroom. Through its emphasis on global engagement, social responsibility, and academic excellence, Mount Abu equips students with the skills, knowledge, and values necessary to thrive in an increasingly interconnected and dynamic world. As a proud student of Mount Abu, I am grateful for the opportunities it has provided me and the doors it has opened, shaping me into a responsible global citizen committed to making a positive impact on the world

-Vikramaditya jha

A school is a garden where children are nurtured with the water of knowledge, but it's glory depends upon the skills and efforts of the gardener. Here at Mount Abu Public School we are blessed to have Mrs. Jyoti Arora who is supportive, hardworking and skilled as our principal.

My school has played a vital role in nurturing and molding me into what I am today, as I have been a part of the Mount Abu Public School family from kindergarten. It has shaped my personality in such a way that I am ready to navigate the complexities of the 21st century, because our school focuses on the United Nations sustainable development goals (SDGs) as well as 21st century skills.

Our school provides a plethora of courses which opens up a world of opportunities for success in life.

The Infrastructure of our school matches International levels and provides its students spacious classroom, fully equipped labs, a vast area for sports as well as art, music and dance rooms. Our school is eco-friendly and has also inaugurated a 'Butterfly Garden' in its vicinity.

Every week, young mapians donate some food under the 'Ek Aas, Ek Paryas' programme, which is then given to the needy people. This helps the learners to develop moral values and move one step further towards the SDGs.

In our school, we are taught to leap forward, hand in hand with science and technology and still be connected with our religious beliefs. Our honourable principal works very hard to provide us with numerous opportunities to participate in various programs and competitions as well as events to polish our life skills.
Skiing tourism in Tyrol⛷️

Tyrol, the heart of the alps, is a destination for skiing tourism, renowned for its stunning Alpine scenery. The skiing season runs from late October to April. The peak season with the best snow conditions is in December through February, unfortunately the slopes are very full currently.

For locals it is offered to buy a season pass called "Freitzeitticket Tirol". With a very decent price you have entry to more than 50 ski areas, museums, and other leisure activities the whole year. Otherwise, the ski pass prices and other tickets are very expensive.

Especially for locals, who live in Tyrol's capital city Innsbruck, ski resorts are easy to reach by public transport or car in a short time.

One of the most famous ski areas is Kitzbühel, which offers a mix of many slope kilometers, family friendly areas and a big Après-ski scene. Kitzbühel is also known for the annual

"Hahnenkamm" race, where the world's best skiers participate in a 4-day event. Tourist from all over the world visit Kitzbühel to see the most famous race on Saturday called "Abfahrt".

As evening descends, the town comes alive with exclusive parties, including the "Weisswurst-Party" (white sausage party) where an invitation is enormously expensive and the traditional "Schnitzel-Party" which offers a taste of the local culture. One thing is clear: in Kitzbühel the people party the hardest. But the town is capturing the essence of both luxury and sports. Even though it sounds exciting, its not without its drawbacks.
Adventures Abroad: Unforgettable School Trips and Tresured Memories

Hello everyone,

We wanted to share some highlights from our school trips over the years. From Salzburg and Carinthia to Vienna, most of our trips have been within Austria. Sounds boring? It really wasn't because Austria offers a wide range of experiences. Generally,we go on a school trip every other year.

Our first memorable trip was to Saalbach Hinterglemm in second grade. It was a real bonding experience since it was our first time away from home, and we were quite young. During our five-day ski trip, we had action-packed days filled with fun. Evenings were spent playing games and attending informative avalanche courses. We made some cool memories, both with and without our teachers. Unfortunately, we don’t have any pictures of this trip, because most of us didn’t own a mobile phone.

Two years later, we were supposed to have a project week, but like many other events, it was canceled due to COVID-19. What a bummer!

In fifth grade, shortly after being placed in different classes, we embarked on a sports week. The winding roads took usthrough mountains and valleys to beautiful Maltschacher See in Carinthia. Each day offered a variety of sports to choosefrom—horseback riding, sailing (as you can see in the photo), and golfing, to name a few. Evenings were filled with plannedactivities, including game nights and outdoor competitions. For many of us, the beach party on our last day was thehighlight. It was a memorable experience meeting new peopleand enjoying music under the stars. We were sad to leave but also exhausted from the trip.

Our all-time favorite trip was to Rome. It was our first international trip as a class, although only a part of our class could participate since it was extracurricular. Despite a busy schedule of sightseeing, we still had time to get a taste of the city. The weather was perfect—sunny and warm. For those studying Italian at school, it was excellent practice. We even got to see the Pope, the highest religious authority in the Catholic Church, as you can see in the pictures. Looking back, many of us recall that week the best of our lives.

Our final school trip was to Vienna, the capital of Austria. We had knowledgeable tour guides with us all week, providing us with lots of information. From the Parliament to musicals, we experienced nearly everything Vienna has to offer. The weather was mixed but worsened as the week progressed. However, that didn't stop us from exploring this important city. We stayed in a hostel, which was great except for the bathroom situation. The best part was its central location near Maria-Hilfer street. The whole trip was "leiwand," as we like to say in Austria. Unfortunately, after the trip, at least half of our class fell sick, but it was definitely worth it.

School trips, despite sometimes being exhausting and tedious, are definitely a part of school life that we will miss after graduation.

Do you also go on school trips? We would love to read more about them.

Best regards from Innsbruck, Austria.

Marie and Martina
