The field trip will take place virtually on the scholastic teacher website. Teachers can explore other tabs about Ellis Island (with pictures, videos, and audio associated to 10 stops), Immigration Stories, and Immigration Data, and give a historical timeline. There also is a tab titled "Virtual Field Trip to Ellis Island" where teachers can find an interview with National Park Rangers who work at Ellis Island so students can learn more about how Ellis Island worked in the past as well as learn about how Ellis Island is now.

Brief Description of the Interactive Activity that Accompanies the field trip

Our activity to accompany the field trip follows our lesson on fractions. We will teach students to add fractions with unlike denominators. Then we will look at the data gathered between 1870 and 1919 and add premade unlike denominator fractions that were made from the data and see what fraction of the total people that came during 1870-1919 came from 2 places. This will make students think about where the most people came from when they came to Ellis Island.

Students will learn the history of Ellis Island, immigration, and the process that immigrants had to go through to live in America. This field trip is interactive and engaging. Students can flip through the different stops, engaging in hands on and minds on content. Additionally, this field trip incorporates mathematics into a history lesson, integrating the material. This field trip may also inspire students to learn more about their families history or experience with immigrating to America. This also creates an interesting independent practice assignment because students can learn from their family members and share this information with the class.
