In science classes, critical thinking skills are imperative to their development in the course. Students need to be critically assessing and evaluating content in order to solve problems. In their science classes they routinely practice having to identify important/pertinent information versus superfluous and determine which is necessary in solving their problem.

Engineering is a good place to learn empathy, as everyone is facing the same problem, and coming up with different solutions through brainstorming help students learn that different points of view are equally valid.

In patient care empathy is the heart of healthcare so in my classes empathy is incorporated into many lessons.

Using names from many different cultures in word problems are utilized. Also when choosing groups for classwork and seating charts I intentionally mix different cultures together. This helps push students out of their comfort zone to understand the feelings and behaviors of other people.

When looking at our AKS (Language Arts & Physics), what we teach has a direct impact on communication and critical thinking.
