Image Control Quiz Reflection

I attempted the quiz twice. On my first attempt I only got 10.5/16. On my second attempt I managed to get 16/16.

On my first attempt I got quite a lot of the questions regarding colour temperature incorrect. A lot of the questions revolving around terminology for example white balance, neutral density etc. I got correct. The question I found quite challenging was the question about depth of field.

I think the only way to grasp a better understanding regarding terminology and theories is to put everything into practice. I really need to start playing around with my camera and adjusting the zoom as well as experimenting with the colour temperature.

Another thing I need to look into is to research more - that is watch more tutorials and read up more about videography and certain techniques and practices. As this area is very new to me, a lot of the terms are quite foreign. So in order to familiarise myself with everything I need to put in the time and effort to really get to know the subject in more depth.

Panasonic Lumix DMC G-85

This camera has great video quality, with the ability to capture video clips at 4K resolution.

However the Auto ISO function can not be used when shooting video which means that lighting may become an issue when filming.

Structurally, the camera is surprisingly light yet feels solid. The battery runs out relatively quickly, however there is an option to attach a grip with an additional battery. Even with the additional grip, the camera does not feel uncomfortably heavy.

It also has a large comfortable grip to hold onto whilst filming and the position of a lot of the buttons are within the range of the index finger whilst holding the camera by the grip.

The autofocus is accurate, and even when moving the camera, the subject continues to remain in focus.

The camera can capture video footage in JPEG and Raw, however the JPEG media tends to be quite washed out.

It has an integrated Wi-Fi and allows images and footages to be easily transferred directly into mobile and laptop devices from the camera.

The camera has an inbuilt stabiliser which is a major benefit when it comes to hand-held videoing as it reduces the likelihood of shaky footage.

Overall, I believe this camera will be suitable to film this video. In terms of sound, based on my own experience, it captures voices quite accurately. The inbuilt stabiliser, the high quality video mode and the excellent autofocus amongst other qualities make it a suitable camera for this assignment.

DJI Ronin S

The DJI Ronin S is a gimbal stabiliser.

It is quite expensive, costing approximately 978AUD.

As a handheld stabiliser, it is quite heavy, amounting to 1.86kg. Attaching the camera to the stabiliser makes it very difficult to film some angles due to the weight of all the equipment.

Additionally when it comes to maneuvering the Ronin S, it takes a lot of practice in order to keep the subject in focus.

The stabiliser has various functions, however they are only compatible with a select number of cameras. Connecting the camera to the stabiliser is not possible with the Panasonic Lumix which means a lot of the features such as the zoom option will not work on the Ronin S.

The battery life of the stabiliser is excellent and can last up to 12 hours.

From experience, balancing the Ronin S also takes a bit of time. The device needs to be properly set to accomodate your camera and it takes a lot of trial and error. However once balanced, it remains the same until you choose to change it.

In terms of stabilisation, when used correctly it can provide extremely smooth and cinematic shots.

In terms of setting up the stabiliser and learning about the different modes, it is quite straightforward.

In terms of using it for this assignment, it will definitely be useful in getting smooth, cinematic footage. However it is quite heavy to hold for extended periods of time.

There are some discrepancies in the storyboard, the shot list and the actual video. This exists because as I was doing the filming I found that I had to add/ remove a few shots to make the overall end product better.

Shooting Schedule

For all of the days, filming starts only in the afternoon. This is due to the amount of light that comes into the room in the morning can be a little excessive and wash out the shots. Because we start filming so late, I have not provided times for lunch as the cast will be eating prior to shooting. In terms of the timing given per shot I have roughly estimated 5-10 minutes per shot. Some shots may take shorter/longer but I think by putting this much time per shot - it provides a bit more flexibility when it comes to managing time. I also haven't factored in travel time as this is not applicable to the location chosen.
