When Tally arrived at the Smoke , Shay was relived to see her. She thaugh that she might had gived the Smoke away by telling Tally. After a couple days, Tally's and Shay's friendship is not goning so good, they both seem interested to the same guy (David0 which creates some problems.

Se had some difficulties understanding the note Shay left her, but she still made it.  Even thaugh the trip went well in general ther was some little complications. Indeed, Tally lost some of her things. For exemple, when she went bathing in the river a flying mahcine came and damge her stuff. Furthermore, this travelling taught her many things. She learned about the vegetation, those beatiful white orchids taht chokes all the other plants and flowers around her. I beleive that one of the major themes in this part of the book is selfishness. Indeed, before the end of the book Tally will have to decide if she will be selfish or not. Tally has to choose between what she wants and what most of the people of the smoke want. When she arrived at the smoke she wanted to activate the neckless so she would be able to be pretty, but she realised that by doing so, she would change the like of many people. It felt weird to her to have to lie to the people she cared about. Everyday, she told herself that she should of had activate the necklace as soon as she got to the smoke because she didn't know she would like it there. First of all, there's no money, they pay ther things by exchanging something of the same value that they don't need. They create there own chloths and past it from generation to generation. Also, unlike in Tally's city, they kill animals to eat and to use they fur. The way it works in New Pretty town is that pretty people don't talk to ugly people. In fact, the pretties can't even be or live with the uglies, because that's the way it has always been. However, in the smoke, people actually realized that nobody is ugly and that those who think they areis only because they got programmed into thinking anything else is ugly.
