         <description><![CDATA[<div>You might&nbsp; be surprised to learn that that modern methods of working with decimals were invented less than 500 years ago. That is really not very long considering basic math concepts have been around thousands of years! The person who is credited with making decimal fractions widely known&nbsp; is Simon Stevin of Bruges, in the Flemish Netherlands. He wanted to teach everyone "how to perform with an ease unheard of, all computations necessary between men by integers without fractions ".&nbsp; Decimal fractions as they look today were used by John Napier, a Scottish mathematician.          <description><![CDATA[<div>Lets do some addition with decimals!<br><br>1.35<br>+.67<br>(notice we always want to line&nbsp; up the decimals)<br>7+5=12 carry the 1 over<br>6+3=9 add the 1=10<br>carry the 1 over again<br>BUT REMEMBER TO BRING YOUR DECIMAL DOWN!<br>1+1=2<br><br>Therefore you will need $2.02 to buy your candy.&nbsp;<br><br>In the future you will be using this to do more adult things like paying bills. Not fun, but you will see how important learning decimals was because you don't want to pay the wrong amount on an important bill. You will also need to know decimals and fractions when you learn to drive, you need to pay attention to how much gas is in your tank!&nbsp; &nbsp; 3/4 of a tank will get&nbsp; you a lot further than 1/4.&nbsp; Why is that? &nbsp; Let me show you how to convert these to decimals and we will see which is larger.&nbsp;<br><br>You can look at the line that divides the fractions as a division symbol. So when you see 3/4 you can also look at it as 3 divided by 4.&nbsp; &nbsp; When you work this out, it equals .75.<br>When you divide 1 by 4 you get .25. So you see when you have 3/4 a tank you can go far, when you&nbsp; have 1/4 , time to find a gas station!</div>]]></description>
