Abraham Lincoln elected

Abraham Lincoln was elected as the 16th president in 1860 on November 6th. His presidency was won without any support from the southern states. He led the U.S. army in the civil war, eventually claiming victory.

Fort Sumter

Between April 12th and 14th, 1861, an attack on Fort Sumter in Charleston, South Carolina broke out. The attack from P. G. T. Beauregard and his 500 men outnumbered Robert Anderson's 80 as Robert Anderson was forced to surrender resulting in a win for the rebels. This was seen as the unofficial official start of the civil war.

Battle of Bull Run

The Battle of Bull Run in Prince William and Fairfax County was the first major battle between the U.S army and the Rebels during the civil war. The battle had started on July 21st, 1861. The U.S suffered another loss in this battle leaving almost 3,000 of Irvin McDowell's men dead. P. G T. Beauregard had once again led his men to victory against the U.S. The first major battle had resulted in a huge financial and human cost for the U.S

Fort Donelson

Another battle had begun in Stewart County, Tennessee between the U.S army and the Rebels. The battle had gone on for 4 days between February 13th-16th, 1862. However, the U.S had managed to win this one with comparatively way fewer casualties than the Rebels. Thanks to Ulysses S. Grant, the U.S was able to overwhelm the Rebels and enabled themselves to keep pushing forward, resulting in the Confederates surrendering Southern Kentucky and some part of Tennessee.

Battle of Shiloh

On April 6th, 1862, a battle had been initiated between the U.S army and the Rebels in Hardin County, Tennessee. Ulysses S. Grant led the U.S to victory with the result of over 23,000 casualties. This led to the continual push for the U.S army into southern territory.

Antietam

The battle of Antietam was the deadliest one day battle in the history of the U.S military. It commenced on September 17th, 1862. The U.S was led by George B. McClellen, while the Rebels were once again led by Robert E. Lee. The battle took place in Washington County, Maryland. The battle was inconclusive as to who had won, however it did allow president Lincoln to write the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation, which would later free millions of enslaved people in the south.

Emancipation Proclamation

At the dawn of a new year, Abraham Lincoln put the Emancipation Proclamation into full effect on January 1st, 1863. The Emancipation Proclamation gave freedom to enslaved people all around the U.S, so long as the U.S had won the war. The document was written in the City of Washington. The Proclamation signaled the end of the Civil War between the U.S army and the Rebels.

First Assault on Vicksburg

The first assault on Vicksburg had begun on May 18th and didn't end until July 4th. The U.S army, led by Ulysses S. Grant, had won this battle handily causing 32,000+ casualties for the Rebels and less than 5,000 for the U.S. The Mississippi river had a huge impact on this battle, allowing communication and supplies to flow for both sides. Lincoln stated that "Vicksburg is the key..." leading this to be a huge win for the U.S as they continued their push into the south.

Gettysburg

The battle of Gettysburg started on July 1st, 1863 between the Rebels and the US army. In Adams County, Pennsylvania, George G. Meade led the U.S to yet another victory, destroying the hope of the Rebels. The battle resulted in over 50,000 casualties. This battle is significant because the Rebels realized they were going to be unable to become independent from the U.S.

Surrender at Appomattox

The Rebels' general, Robert E. Lee, surrendered his army at the Appomattox court house in Virginia. On April 9th, 1865, The U.S had officially won the Civil war after many battles and deaths. This led to the emancipation Proclamation had been acted upon freeing millions of enslaved people. President Lincoln and General Grant had made it so this war resulted in a U.S win which has forever shaped our country differently.
