Broken Promises/Dreams

In the book the idea of Broken Promises comes thru Rex and his views. The whole dream of the glass castle began when he promised Jeanette that they would built and that he had the blueprints, and that was left was the money. And for years Jeannette believed her father and held this dream. Until she realized that it was a lie to keep her attach to her dad and that it was never gonna be built. Another instance would be when Jeannette ask her dad to quit drinking for her birthday, in Jeannette's mind she believed that the reason why the family couldn't progress was because of her dad's drinking, but in the end her dad couldn't keep the promise. I picked this picture because it reminds me on the instance when Rex send the kids to make a hole that will be the beginning on the Glass castle, but in the end the hole turn out to be a trash hole. I would have the say that the hole represented the hopes and dreams of the kids, in end they were incomplete
In the quote,
“We had some times, didn't we?'
'We did.'
'Never did build that Glass Castle.'
'No. But we had fun planning it.”

Jeannette and her siblings went thru so many hardships and horrible living conditions in their lives due to their parents lack of involvement. They lived in disgusting places that had no plumbing and covered in filth .Their parents didn't care what where they live or the lack of food they had.Her parents would rather buy a Cadillac or keep chocolate for themselves instead of buying food for the family.I picked this picture because it shows the children hungry and trying to feed their little sister, but their isn't enough food.
In the quote,
"Mom was't making sense to me. I wondered is she had been looking forward to eating the margarine herself. And that made me wonder if she was the one who'd stolen the can of corn the night before, which got me a little mad."It was the only thing to eat in the whole house," I said. Raising my voice, I added,"I was hungry."-
Another quote-
"Don't be so picky," she told me. "Just slice off the maggoty parts. The inside is fine."

Reality vs Fantasy

In the quote
"Mom gave me a startled look. I'd broken one of our unspoken rules: We are always supposed to pretend our life was one long and incredibly fun adventure."
In the Walls family they have this ideology that everything is cupcakes and rainbows even though they don't have food or a place to stay. They believe that everything is an adventure and aren't aware of the problems they face.I picked this picture because it represents this situation so well. The family in surrounded in garbage, A filthy house, but they aren't focused on that. They are putting their attention on the first snow they see.Their focus is never on the urgent, but on the fantasy.

In the quote
“Why spend the afternoon making a meal that will be gone in an hour," she'd ask us, "when in the same amount of time, I can do a painting that will last forever?”

After reading the this book I can tell that Rex and Rosemary are not your atypical parents, far from it. They are nothing that social norms would have in place. They are reckless,non-realistic, and irresponsible. Allowing their three year old to cook hot dogs and allowing them to go out late, is something that normal parents would not do.I decided to pick this picture because it represents the situation the kids are in with their parents. They always have to seem as the bigger person when their parents are acting like the children. This pictures represents the theme because it should seem the other was around where the parent takes care of the kid.

Acceptance

In the quote,
"Life's too short to worry about what other people think,'' Mom said.''Anyway, they should accept us for who we are.”

Rosemary is always gonna be her same old self. It doesn't matter if she is in the streets or in a pretty house. She will always make a mess out of it. She will never take responsibility for her mistakes or her actions. She will be always be selfish and non caring for her kids. Jeanette had to learn to accept this fact and live with it all her life. She could never rely on her mom and her mom never had her best interest. I decided to pick this picture because it represents the situation that Jeanette has had with her mom. This picture represents her acceptance because she no longer is denying that fact that this is her mom.

In the quote,
"I know". I knew that this his way, he would be. I also knew that I'd never be coming back."

In this journey that Jeanette and her siblings became more mature and more responsible at such a young age. The kids that to learn how to take care of themselves and of their parents. In the instance when Lori had to made the lesson plans for her mom's work, so she wouldn't get fired. Or when all the siblings left west Virginia to New york, in order to be away from their parents.Another instance would be when the kids had to go to trash cans in search of food because they didn't have any. I choose this picture because it represents the coming of age of Jeanette. She is now very successful and has rising up, even though her mom didn't help her in the process. She is now up and her mom is still down.
