The game can be completed by children, teens, adults, etc and allows you to communicate with others when stuck on a level. The public interaction that it closes off is in person communication (as most will play in the comfort of their homes). It’s an app where you spin for a letter and you are given categories. The objective is that you find a word/thing that starts with that letter within each of the categories faster, rarer, and correctly spelled out. This example happened to be a pretty good win for me. When I was in high school, I used this to pass the time during downtime in between classes and as a way to interact with my friends. There’s a lot of social interaction in this app because you can play with random people all over the world, friends, and in different languages. It offers lighthearted competition with a diverse online community. It closes off face-to-face interaction outside of the game and isn’t done in real-time. There’s a chat option too, but it’s hardly used.

It allows me to access all my classes, assignments, grades, and documents. In many ways this makes doing schoolwork easier. It allows you to communicate with your professors and classmates on discussion boards, I find these communities to sometimes be helpful when I need assistance in a class. It also makes class much more individualistic. You are responsible for checking your class pages every day to make sure you keep up with classes, and in many ways it has removed the need to interact with other classmates and your instructors. Some of my classes are completely online, and I have never personally spoken to any other person in the class because blackboard makes these interactions obsolete. In this regard it completely removes any traditional classroom interaction. This offers a community to people who want to share the highlights of their lives or even the lows of their lives to show you that you are not alone. I have friends who share motivational posts that end up encouraging me throughout the day! My friends may never personally send me these things but they have no idea the impact it has on my life. The ability to create playlists and share them with others is a great influence on social interactions within Spotify. The community it offers in my opinion is a positive one and a great place to find more music to enjoy or use as comfort. The public interaction it may close off is the fact of when my headphones are in, they are definitely loud and I can not hear someone who may be trying to talk to me. It also is helpful because it is nice to have something in common with people who are on the same path as you are. It is also used as a coping, mechanism when we ate struggling as well because it allows us to talk with each other and relate to one another and help each other out. It does prevent us from having face-to-face conversations. It does prevent us from having that personal connection and contact with each other. I use this every day to communicate with the people in my class. I find myself on this app every day because I believe that it’s really humorous. If the videos don’t make you laugh, then the comments from other people will. I’ve seen people start friendships and relationships through this app and I feel like it’s a great way to engage with different audiences. TikTok is also used by businesses and entrepreneurs to make money and gain exposure for their brands. A lot of people use TikTok to promote their businesses and ideas.  Even celebrities like Nas X and Lizzo use TikTok as a fun outlet to stay in touch with their fans. Sometimes I find myself spending way too much time on TikTok watching videos. So I try to limit myself to an hour a day, just so I can maintain a healthy work and play lifestyle.

I use it so much because I think music is a major driving force to hold my life together. I check my gmail app frequently, just out of necesity to keep up to date with school stuff and obligations, but if I didn't need to, I wouldn't be using that or really any other apps all that much. I check the eBay and Reverb.com apps frequently in case there's a good deal on something I've been looking into, or so I can snag a hard to find part that I've been searching for years for and need to finish up a project. Those don't really have a social aspect though, or any sense of community. 

I stopped using social media pretty much altogether two or three years ago, and I've eschewed smartphones and computers as volatile drugs that I've been forced to endure as they further encompass the basics of daily existence. I used to have a very unhealthy relationship with social media, and I've come to realize that being forced to see the daily lives and opinions of everyone I've ever known; knowing who's seen what I've posted, who has left my messages unanswered, who 'likes' my most recent project, and who has decided to suddenly drop out of or drop into my life, was far too big of a trigger for my mental health struggles and chronic anxiety and depression. Of course, I've never actually deleted the apps, but rather hit them far back in a folder of my phone that I'll never remember to look for. Technology is not a friend– it's a tool, and one that I have a great hesitation to approach now. I've never been computer savvy, and the glitches and hiccups of 1s and 0s have caused me far more stress than the benefits I've reaped could ever make up for, from corrupted hard drives, to weird backwards compatibility stuff that I don't understand, to the constant obsolescence cycle of software for irreplaceable hardware, etc, but to live in the modern era means to need phones and computers just to go to school, work a job, or have any semblance of interpersonal relationships with the average person. I don't want to have to use any of this stuff, but because I have to, I do, and because it's there, I use it more than I have to or want to, and such is the cycle of a, perhaps "Neo-ludditian" (I have no idea if Neo-luddites are a real thing– that's just something I made up now; if there actually are Neo-luddites and they're like awful people or something, I'm not associated in any way haha), technological addiction.

The app that I've chosen to post about is Bandsintown– an app that keeps track of all of the artists you listen to across various platforms, and lets you know when someone you like is playing at a venue near you. As far as I know, there isn't a functioning social aspect of Bandsintown (they've tried, but they always end up removing the features because nobody wants it) aside from the ability to have it post to your Facebook or tweet whenever you mark yourself as 'interested' or 'going' to a show, but I don't have that synced anyway. Regardless, I use the app to keep up to date with concerts, so I can plan my annual concert schedule accordingly. I check back frequently for new tor announcements, added dates, ticket-presale notifications, etc. 

I wouldn't really say the app in itself either constructs or closes off public interaction of any sort, but I would day that it helps to facilitate socialization in a somewhat unexpected way– as an avid concertgoer, I frequently find myself lined up outside of venues for hours before entrance in hopes of getting a good spot or getting the good merch (I'm a big concert poster collector, and often if you want to get the more limited serigraphic prints, you gotta get there way early), and as a result, I wind up with a lot of time to kill on line. What better way to kill three hours on line in a dingy Brooklyn sidestreet in the subfreezing February cold, or in the sweltering humid-heat of a pre-thunderous August day upstate? Talking to the other fans in line! While it may seem mundane, I find it a great joy to talk to my fellow concertgoers while we wait out the countdown to showtime. Strangers indeed, but there's already a guarantee of common interest– no casual fan would wait for hours before showtime, when they could just as well show up a half hour before. Often, the conversations turn away from the band, and instead we find ourselves talking away the hours about our shared passion for woodworking, or about the kinds of music we each make, or about how one of us has been to somewhere the other is interested in, or any multitude of other topics, and somehow those hours on line wind up feeling like twelve minutes. We chat on end as if we're old friends, and then when doors open, we go our separate ways to out own seats, and we're strangers once again. Rarely do you ever cross paths again, but sometimes, maybe a year or two later at the same venue you do, and it's all "Oh hey!  we talked on line last time the band was in town! how's it going?" and that's pretty much it. 

In a sense it's frustrating, getting so much more out of a single conversation with a total stranger than you get out of years and years of friendship with someone else; knowing more about the interests and aspirations of a compete stranger than you get from 6 years of near-daily texts between yourself and a friend from high school; having a random person from a concert 3 years ago see you and remember what you're studying and what your hobbies are better than the aunts and uncles you see every month do. Maybe that's part of the appeal though? Strangers on the way in, strangers on the way out– so the seeming anonymity makes it easier to open up, and easier to listen? Or maybe they're just better people haha. Youtube has a comments section where people who watch the vidoes can message and interact with each other about how they felt about the video. Also, the comments section can reach the creator of the vidoe and they can see how people felt about their creation and type of content. The community on Youtube can only go both ways. It can be incredibly toxic and full of haters or be fully positive. Not everyone will like every video. Everyone has opinions and Youtube can be a place to express them. Instagram and YouTube are probably my most frequented social media interactions. Instagram allows users to share their lives through a variety of mediums with either the public or their following. These features make the community aspect of this app heavily visual dependent. In my opinion, communities on Instagram are formed through the visual elements of someone's post. I think this has both postive and negative implications on the kinds of social interaction this app constructs. For example, I think Instagram is one of the best apps for creators, designers, and artists--people who create art. The heavy emphasis on visuals in posts allow artists to showcase their work to a wide audience. I actually have a separate Instagram account where I only follow artists and designers whose work I appreciate. Instagram allows me to save artists post as well. In this way, I can discover artists easily, quickly save works that I like, and refer to all my "saved" posts at my own convenience. 

On the other hand, I think this leads to people comparing themselves with others. I think it also objectifies people in some ways--with how pictures of bodies are easily and quickly liked and shared. 

In terms of public interaction that Instagram closes off, I think some people are turned off by the fact that Instagram promotes community primarily through visuals. These people might prefer other mediums like Twitter where people interact through writing. Another thing is that I think people rarely get exposed to different perspectives due to the way Instagram feeds a user posts that they might like. The gameplay isn’t the most engaging or refreshing, but there’s something pure and enjoyable about the low stakes involved. It keeps track of your steps, which adds a light fitness element, and asks how your day was at the end of each day, which is something I wouldn’t expect to enjoy, but it actually helps me reconsider how I spend my time.
The game interacts with the public sphere in interesting ways — your flowers are visible, along with everyone else’s, for roughly 10 days, but you can’t see other people or their Pikmin unless you participate in a challenge or expedition together. These conflicting features can be a bit isolating, and it certainly doesn’t feel like very many people here playing along with me, but it is nice to see a couple people on campus playing through their flower tracks on the ground.

So if i took a picture 5 years ago today, snapchat will show me those pictures or videos of what i was doing on that exact day! I think that feature is really cool because a lot of people may forget about things that they have done or seen in the past and this allows you to be reminded of certain things you may have done or seen!! Just like any other social media platforms, i do believe that these apps including snapchat do give off a toxic environment. As a result, TikTok provides an almost infinite number of communities to join, given that anyone's movies may be shared with people in the same specialty. This tab organizes videos that one has previously liked using the app's algorithm. This enables the formation of communities by bringing together people who share the same interests. In regards to the app's public engagement, users can opt to remain private either by not voicing on videos or not revealing their actual identity while responding. However I think this is a fun app for everyone to relax and have fun.

Instagram is one of my social media interactions with my family, friends, and world. So they can share their daily life, feeling, or thoughts, and communicate with each other. Also, they can choose their account private or public. If they make their account public, anyone who has an Instagram account can see their posts. So we are globally connected even if they are living in different countries. They can also follow others who have similar interests. For example, if you are interested in artwork, you can follow artists or painters to see their artwork. Also, there are “stories” that are only available for 24 hours to be viewed when posting. So you can post just anything you want even if it is a really simple thing.

In terms of the community aspect, it has both positive and negative impacts on people. Instagram can have a positive impact just like I said above, but there are also negative sides. One of the main negative effects is comparing each other. Sometimes, people tend to show their wealth or pride on social media, so people who saw their posts can feel relative deprivation. Instagram also can close off public interaction. If users make their accounts private, then it limits the people who can see their posts.

The Spotify community, compared to other social media sites, is unique in that it is entirely audio-based, and communication outside that medium isn’t possible. Instead, users are more likely to find music or podcasts on Spotify, and communicate about them on other platforms. My friends and I will compile music in playlists and share them with each other through Discord, for example. On a larger scale, a celebrity or other famous individual might post a song, or a highly anticipated podcast may drop, and it will create a microcosm of activity where friends and strangers alike discuss, argue or simply share about it on a multitude of social media sites. Music is a deep-set aspect of humanity, and I find myself unable to think of a more influential app than Spotify – even if it often takes a backseat to other social media sites such as Twitter.
