Welcome to the P3 Padlet. I am both pleased and excited to be teaching Primary 3 over the next school year. It was a lovely first week, with the children settling in well to their new classroom. Please take time each week to log in here and see what your child has been up to and talk to them about the things they have been learning.

As always, Ratho Primary School’s children will be given the chance to learn about Children’s Rights, Global Goals and the Well-Being Indicators (SHANARRI). These help to provide them with the necessary skills and language to articulate their own thoughts and ideas.

If you have something you would like to discuss with me, please use the Ratho-Admin email account to do so and I will contact you as soon as I can.

Here are some key dates and general information.

PE Days

Monday & Friday

Meet the Teacher

Wednesday, 16th September

P3 Assembly

Thursday, 13th May

Reading

The children will have regular opportunities to read a variety of different texts, helping with their phonic and word building skills. They will continue to read in small groups, appropriate to their stage, practising keywords and fluency. They will use predictive skills, explaining what they think will happen and why. The children will also read keywords and sentences to learn more about our topic on the human body. We will have regular visits to our school library where the children will have the opportunity to choose a book of their choice.

Writing

The children will write regularly and will include a beginning, middle and end when writing an imaginative story. They will be more confident when recognising a noun, verb and adjective in a sentence. They will also begin to uplevel simple sentences, thinking of interesting openers and adjectives. We will also be writing reports on different parts of the human body as part of our topic work. The children will learn what a report is, how to begin one and the information they will need to include. We will create a poster on what Sustainable Goals are. The children will have regular handwriting lessons each week and will use cursive writing when doing all writing tasks.

Listening & Talking

The children will have opportunities to talk about their learning. They will answer questions on our topic work during teaching time. The children will also read aloud in groups and talk about the text whilst doing so. As part of our ‘special person’ each child will be able to bring in a special item they have and share it with the class, explaining why it is so special to them.

A common theme in our health and wellbeing teaching this year will be the reference to the Wellbeing Indicators, SHANARRI, which stands for safe, healthy, active, nurtured, achieving, respected, responsible and included. We will link these into the work we are doing, helping the children to recognise what each one is and what each looks like in school. We will also link these into the school’s continuing focus on Children’s Rights. Our Class Charter has been created as a whole class, with the expectations of each person in the class shared together.

We will also be using Zones of Regulation to help the children recognise how they feel and how this affects their behaviour. We will look at strategies they can use to help them centre themselves and be able to learn throughout the day. They will also help the children to deal with conflicts.

In PE, we will be focusing on field games. The children will have the opportunity to play hockey, football and rugby. The children will also participate in fitness sessions to build stamina for field games.

A busy and productive morning in P3. Our Support For Learning teacher was taking each reading group and spending time working on targeted skills for each of them. I was taking each of the spelling groups, revising learned sounds and introducing new ones. This format will continue for the next few weeks, ensuring all of the learners needs are being met. The children worked hard on the follow up tasks and there was a real feeling of focus and purpose in the classroom. Well done P3!

The children have been learning how to read and interpret different charts over the past few weeks, including a pictogram and a bar chart. They have been learning how to use the collected information to see what is the most, or most popular, least or least popular, the difference between two different categories in a survey and how to calculate how many items are included in a survey. This morning we conducted a survey to give them experience on how to do this. We linked the work to our topic and focused on the colour of eyes in the class. The children used tally marks to gather the information and we then used this to make a bar chart. Coincidently, on Newsround that day, there was an article on the great butterfly count. This gave us a chance to discuss different kinds of survey and to give it a real-life context. We will continue to work on information handling skills over the next few weeks.

We decided to have one last tournament in hockey to demonstrate the confidence and skills that have been built over the past few weeks. The children have learned how to hold a hockey stick correctly, to use both sides of it to control the ball, how to try and take the ball off an opponent. They also learned how to dribble with control, how to pass and how to shoot. The games this morning were competitive, but all the children encouraged each other and played fairly. I am so impressed with the effort and commitment that all the children have shown and the games were very entertaining. Great work P3!

On a Monday they will be given their home learning jotter which has the words they learned from the previous week. They will read them over with a partner then copy them once. They then use a whiteboard and their partner tests them. The children then pack their jotter to take home, where they should read them to an adult then write them down one more time. Finally, they should try and write two sentences using a capital letter and a full stop. Please let me know if you have any questions.

They wrote down a number then looked at the value of the digit in the hundred’s column, the tens column and the ones column. They wrote the true value of each and showed how they go together to make a number. For example, 238 = 200 + 30 + 8, 729 = 700 + 20 + 9. They will use this information to help them as they begin to add and subtract numbers up to and including 1000.

This morning the children watched an educational video from Save a Life for Scotland. The aim of the video was to show the children how to respond if someone around them collapses or becomes unconscious. The tag line for the children was – CALL – CHECK – CPR. The children were shown how to check if someone was conscious or unconscious. It provided some excellent background on the purpose and importance of the heart, which the children have been learning about in their topic on The Body. The children were also shown how to do CPR using cushions, jackets, jumpers and teddies to practice on.

This morning the children were revising the work we did last week on Venn diagrams. They were shown again how to insert information correctly, finding out which of the three categories it belonged to on the diagram. They worked with their talk partner and were given a variety of different pictures with different things on each. For example, football. The children had to say if the liked or disliked it. If they disliked it, they wouldn’t glue it into the diagram. If they liked it, they would glue into the section with their name, or, if they. both liked it, they put it into the middle section. The class worked well on this and showed a good understanding of Venn diagrams.

This afternoon the children were learning about the lungs. They were introduced to the respiratory system and the purpose of it. They saw that the mouth and nose were the start of the system and they that these help us to breathe in the air around us. They were then introduced to keywords, such as trachea and the diaphragm. Central to their learning, however, was that we need the oxygen from the air we breath and we need to get rid of carbon dioxide. They also learned that smoking is a risk because the smoke fills the lungs and means less oxygen gets around our blood stream.

We have been building up our story writing skills over the past few weeks. This week, we have been continuing to do this by writing short stories that have a clear beginning, middle and end. The children were writing as Goldilocks, retelling how she came to find the bears cottage. They had to say where she had been going when she discovered the cottage then describe some of the things she did in it. We planned together and shared some ideas to get started. The children worked hard, using their ‘have a go’ books to try and spell unfamiliar words. They also tried hard to use capital letters and full stops as well as different kinds of openers, such as ‘next’ and ‘then’. We will build on this work over the next term, widening the vocabulary and punctuation as we do.
