Welcome, language enthusiasts, to our virtual classroom! Today, let's dive into the fascinating world of structural texts in English lessons – an essential aspect of mastering the art of communication.

Understanding Structural Texts: Structural texts are the backbone of effective communication. Whether you're crafting a narrative, reporting facts, or providing instructions, the structure plays a crucial role in ensuring your message is clear and impactful. In English lessons, we unravel the secrets of structuring our thoughts and ideas.

The Basics: Let's start with the fundamentals. Structural texts can be broadly categorized into various types, each serving a unique purpose. Narrative texts take us on a storytelling journey, recounting events in a sequential order. Report texts present information in a factual and organized manner, catering to our analytical side. Procedural texts guide us through steps and instructions, ensuring we successfully complete tasks. Descriptive texts, on the other hand, paint vivid pictures through detailed observations.

Why Structure Matters: Imagine constructing a house without a blueprint – chaos, right? Similarly, a well-organized structure is like a roadmap for your writing. It guides the reader through your ideas, making your message coherent and easily digestible. In English lessons, we emphasize the importance of clarity, ensuring that your thoughts flow seamlessly from one point to the next.

Description is about sensory experience—how something looks, sounds, tastes. Mostly it is about visual experience, but description also deals with other kinds of perception.

But in particular, the descriptive text is, “…… is a text which says what a person or a thing is like. Its purpose is to describe and reveal a particular person, place, or thing.”

So, it can be said that the descriptive text is a text that explains about whether a person or an object is like, whether its form, its properties, its amount and others. The purpose of the descriptive text is clear, that is to describe, represent or reveal a person or an object, either abstract or concrete.

Language Feature of Descriptive Text

– Specific participant : has a certain object, is not common and unique (only one). for example: Bandengan beach, my house, Borobudur temple, uncle Jim

– The use of the adjective (an adjective) to clarify the noun, for example: a beautiful beach, a handsome man, the famous place in Jepara, etc.

– The use of simple present tense: The sentence pattern used is simple present because it tells the fact of the object described.

– Action verb: verbs that show an activity (for example, run, sleep, walk, cut etc.)

report text is one type of text that is categorized as “factual texts.” This kind of text is often said as “twin brother” of descriptive text. So that many students are “confused” how to distinguish the these texts.

But actually it is not too difficult to distinguish between Descriptive Text and Report Textwwww

Definition of Report Text

The term report text is often also known as informational report. The Report, in Concise Oxford Dictionary 10th Edition, is defined as 1) an account given of a matter after investigation or consideration. 2) a piece of information about an event or situation. It can be concluded, in term of language, the report text is a text that function to provide information about an event or situation, after holding investigation and through various considerations.

The definition of report text is also almost similar to what is often mentioned in some English books at high school level, “Reports text is a text which is the result of systematic observation and analyzes.” Generic Structure of Report Text

, Report text also has only two generic structures:

General Classification stating classificatio

Descriptive Text Definition, Generic Structures, Purposes, Language Features Definition of Descriptive Text Descriptive Text is a text which says what a person or a thing is like. Its purpose is to describe and reveal a particular person, place, or thing. In a broad sense, description, as explained by Kane (2000: 352), is defined like in the following sentence: Description is about sensory experience—how something looks, sounds, tastes. Mostly it is about visual experience, but description also deals with other kinds of perception. But in particular, the descriptive text is, “…… is a text which says what a person or a thing is like. Its purpose is to describe and reveal a particular person, place, or thing.” So, it can be said that this descriptive text is a text that explains about whether a person or an object is like, whether its form, its properties, its amount and others. The purpose of the descriptive text is clear, that is to describe, represent or reveal a person or an object, either abstract or concrete. Generic Structure of Descriptive Text When writing descriptive text, there are some generic structures (actually not mandatory) for our writing to be true. The arrangement is: 1. Identification: (contains about the introduction of a person, place, animal or object will be described.) 2. Description: contains a description of something such as animal, things, place or person by decribing its features, forms, colors, or anything related to what the writer describe. Purpose of Descriptive text 1. To describe person, thing or place in specific 2. To describe a particular person, thing or place. Language Feature of Descriptive Text 1. Specific participant : has a certain object, is not common and unique (only one). for example: Bandengan beach, my house, Borobudur temple, uncle Jim 2. The use of the adjective (an adjective) to clarify the noun, for example: a beautiful beach, a handsome man, the famous place in jepara, etc. 3. he use of simple present tense: The sentence pattern used is simple present because it tells the fact of the object described. 4. Action verb: verbs that show an activity (for example, run, sleep, walk, cut etc….
