Wilfred Owen presents the idea that an extremely negative and melancholy matter in the poem ‘Exposure’. The poet highlights this in his use of the emotive language ‘our brains ache’. This phrase clearly suggests that the heroic soldiers may not only be affected by the cold, gloomy days of the war, but also mentally. The verb ‘ache’ from this evidence also tells us that war is a painful and agonising idea.

Further on in the text, it states in each of Owen’s eight stanzas ends with a short half line. In the first, third, fourth and final verses Owen creates the burden: ‘But nothing happens’. Each of the short, last lines in the remaining stanzas has a story of its own to tell.

Owen had a negative attitude towards war and presented war as lethal and virulent in his poem Exposure. 'Our brains ache, in the merciless iced East winds that knive us...' The verb 'knive' implies that the harsh weather is slowly killing the soldiers and that their brains are throbbing by the bitter winds. The noun 'merciless' also exemplifies that the weather is very relentless.
