Composition I
09 September 2018

My Final Reflection of Amy Doty Class

Last course I had a bad experience with a professor who made me think that Im weak and cannot achieve anything. At that time I felt that I had really bad English writing because Im not Native English speaker. The course this semester let me think positive even though that English not my first language, it does not mean that I cannot try to be a better writer, and never give up on what I want to achieve in the end. At the beginning of the course my struggle was on describing things in essays. I mean that I was not able to write whatever I want to explain things like how I describe stuff when I speak. When I tried to write I felt that every words is gone and nothing left to write down. Moreover, sometimes I just simply cannot make sense of the little symbols that make up the words that are supposed to mean something to me, regardless of the content. No matter how carefully I write, sometimes I just can't take even remedial concepts away from what I'm writing. I lost motivation immediately until I met the professor Amy Doty. She let me fix my writing by walking with me on every step. She was there to help for all students even on her busy days, she tried her best to meet us. I went to her more than four times for help. I felt comfortable with her because she treated me as friend, and she was so humble. I also gives her a lot of emails and she always write back and responds quickly. That is why everybody likes her because she does not let us feel stupid even if we do wrong things. Now in my life, Im not afraid to make mistakes in my writing because it is better than to do nothing and learn nothing, and do not develop yourself. This is one of the things that I achieved and grew by this course which is building my writing skill, and make me proud of what Im trying to write even if it is not developed well.

I had a good experience with the texts we read. Every time we read, Amy make us annotate whatever comes in mind, such as main ideas, important facts or reason of the texts. The annotation helped me a lot to build my vocabulary. For example, when I read the text and found something that I did not know I looked it up online to see the meaning and the vocabulary of it.

I also had an amazing experience by working with peers this course. This technique I have not seen it in other classes. You do not know how much working with peers helped me by understanding different opinions, and see what others think about issue or articles. Also, when peers respond, comment or give a suggestion that helps the writer catch his weakness and strength. My peers were particularly helpful when we did an assignments on Literacy Narrative Discussion Board. They helped me be more thoughtful. Most of them if not all were helpful. In the end, peers review made me learn useful things to make me a more efficient conversationalist.

We have done a lot of assignments that helps me so much become a good thinker. For example, the course theme of social issues which is mine was about teen pregnancy. All the fourth essays was about same topic but different details. This essay make me think why I chose to write about early pregnancy specifically. By finishing all the essays, I realized that I have all the right to write about teen pregnancy because teenage pregnancy is one of the most common issues in our societies today, which makes the society responsible for addressing this issue. This assignment opened my mind to think that we have to make teens conscious of whatever exists in any relationship, and we help teens get into a right way to make their life better.

The professor Amy had a wonderful teaching style. Her teaching style and lighthearted manner made our Composition an enjoyable experience. She is also very willing to help either through email or office hours. For example, every time we had a project or essays, she used enough time to explain the material to let us understand and earn a good grade. I do not think that all the English professors care about the students like how Doty does. That makes her a special teacher. Also she check almost every group of work in our class to make sure that we understood, and able to share our thoughts and experiences with each other. This course was so much fun and I learned a lot of things because of her. I heard that our entire class wanted to take her for Composition two, but it would not work because she does not teach other English classes. Amy also very good at explaining things and always willing to help. Everybody can get good grades as long as you got stuff done on time and according to guidelines. There is no reason to fail the class if you do the papers as they are given, and pay attention to her. In the end I want to thank the professor Amy Doty for keeping the class interesting. Personally, if you fail a class with her, there is something wrong with you.
