Cultural sensitivity was one of the topics covered under module five’s “Nursing is cultural and contextual”. During that week, we delved into the many cultural differences, disparities and how it affect the overall delivery of care. One area that stood out to me was healthcare and Indigenous communities.

When is it okay to use such misguided gestures to undermine professional contributions? Some could counter that Josh's tobacco offer from the hospital is an acknowledgment of his culture.

However, instead of appreciating the value of professional skills and fair compensation, this approach is insensitive and misguided, treating cultural appreciation merely as a token. This is why we, as healthcare professionals, must be culturally aware, sensitive, and competent when dealing with people from other cultures, ensuring that our actions are respectful and just.

Here is a picture of my family. Ten years ago, my grandma was diagnosed with tuberculosis, which was devastating for us. The healthcare team responsible for her care was truly amazing. They ensured we were involved in every integral decision regarding her treatment and thoroughly explained both the positive and negative effects of each choice we made.

I chose this image because it deeply reminded me of my family. As humans, we strive to be healthy, and while we may sympathize with those who are terminally ill, we never hope or imagine ourselves in their situation. My family is no different. Coming from a background where most members work in healthcare, we never thought we would face a scenario where my uncle succumbed to cancer. This experience truly solidified my understanding of what family means. I witnessed how every member took turns contributing to his medical bills and collaborated with the nurses. One key moment I would like to highlight is my deep appreciation for the nurses who communicated with us and involved us in his care plan, allowing us to spend more time with him.

Homelessness has become a major issue in Canada, and it is now also affecting our mental health

I completed my clinical placement in the mental health unit this past summer. It was filled with diverse people with unique situations. Two thoughts come to mind when reading a patient's chart and seeing that they have been hospitalized for an extended length of time. Are they in the unit because their treatment is not progressing as much as it could, or are there outside issues that are making them stay longer? Homelessness was among the most important external variables I saw. Patients and healthcare professionals face difficulties when mental health and homelessness coexist.

I selected this artifact because it illustrates the yin and yang nature of the interaction between mental health and homelessness. It's challenging to escape this vicious circle. The question arises, after effectively treating their mental illness to minimize the symptoms, do we just send them home? But wait a minute, they do not have homes, so we're just throwing them back on the streets, where the unforgiving environment and lack of assistance can easily lead to a recurrence of their mental health problems.

So, one could wonder if the housing crisis is to blame for a majority of those suffering from mental illness. When do nurses enter this scenario, then? In this case, nurses like us act as advocates. As nurses, it is our responsibility to speak up for people who are vulnerable, such as the homeless and those who are struggling with mental health difficulties. We may accomplish this by bringing attention to the issue and working with housing organizations and social workers.

I chose this project because it provided me with three ways of knowing such as empirical inquiry: providing hands-on experience and evidence, ethical inquiry: testing ethical boundaries and decision-making abilities, and aesthetic inquiry: portrayal of oneness and unity.

Here is a picture of me and my colleague on the last day of our clinical placement at Peterborough Regional Health Centre (PRHC). It was a bittersweet moment because we were happy that we finally concluded the semester, but we were sad because we would miss each other. I chose this picture because it represents strength and resilience. The faces in the picture are smiling, but the situations each of them is facing are critical. Some are mourning the loss of a parent, some just lost their job, some are facing issues with meeting the passing grade of the course, and some are facing troubles with their student visa. Despite this, we found each other as beacons of strength and support.
