Holes, a book authored by Louis Sachar, is a book telling the fictional story of a teenage boy named Stanley Yelnats. He is cursed by something that his great-great grandfather did decades ago. The curse brought him so much bad luck. So much bad luck that Stanley was wrongfully convicted of theft and was sentenced by a judge to months in a correctional camp for juveniles, also known as Camp Green Lake. While at the Camp, he and everyone else who has been sent there has to dig one big hole every single day. Maybe it's 'discipline', but maybe the warden of the camp is using them to look for something. . .

MY OPINIONS:

What I LOVED about the book is that the author wrote it with a lot of detailed imagery. When I read a book, imagery is what intrigues me the most. It sparks more interest in most people. When I read Holes, it felt as if I was actually IN the book. I also enjoyed the author's use of flashbacks to explain things. I didn't dislike the book as a whole, but I disliked that some things were not explained enough. Some details were left out, but maybe it was to build suspense. What I found interesting within the plot of Holes was that the characters each had their own unique stories, nicknames, and personalities. This is a wonderful book, however, I cannot compare it to anything but the real world. People are wrongfully convicted of things all the time, and when Stanley was receiving his sentence, it reminded me of nothing else but how unfair the world really is.

1.) "If only, if only," the woodpecker sighs, "The bark on the tree was just a little bit softer."
While the wolf waits below, hungry and lonely,
He cries to the moo-oo-oon,
"If only, if only" -Pg. 8
This quote is significant to me because as mentioned before, Stanley is cursed because of his great-great grandfather. This quote is part of a lullaby that was passed on from where the curse began.
2.) "My real name is Hector."
"Hector," Stanley repeated.
"Hector Zeroni." -Pg. 119
This quote is significant to me because when the story of how Stanley was cursed was told, it stated that the person who cursed his great-great grandfather's name was Madame Zeroni.
3.) "I stole the sneakers." -Zero Pg. 225
This quote is significant to me because, in the beginning of the book, Stanley was sent to Camp Green Lake because he was accused of stealing sneakers. However, in the ending of the book, we find out that Zero, another important character in the book, was the one who actually stole the sneakers.

Yes, I would absolutely recommend this book to everyone. I believe everyone would enjoy it, but most importantly those who love imagery like myself. In addition to deep, creative readers. Those who read and make theses based off of what they just read. Those who let imagery take them other places outside of the book. There is never a dull moment in this book, and it always keeps you hooked on it. Holes will have you endlessly interested.
