GROUP 3: Sơn, Lâm, Phi, Ngọc,

VẤN ĐỀ SỐ 3:

What are the similarities and differences in the operating principles of these two types of brakes?

Key Differences

Now, let's focus on what sets them apart:

Design and Operation:

Drum Brakes work by pushing two curved brake shoes outwards to press against the inner surface of a rotating brake drum. The entire mechanism is contained within a closed system.

Disc Brakes operate by using a caliper to squeeze two brake pads against both sides of a rotating disc rotor. This system is exposed to the elements.

Heat Dissipation:

This is a major difference. Because they are a closed system, drum brakes have very poor heat dissipation. The heat gets trapped inside, leading to a phenomenon called brake fade, which significantly reduces braking efficiency, especially during continuous or heavy braking.

Disc brakes, on the other hand, dissipate heat very effectively due to their open design. Air circulates freely over the rotor and pads, cooling them down quickly and ensuring consistent braking performance.

Why Do Disc Brakes Need More Power Assist?

This is a crucial technical point. Disc brakes require more power assistance than drum brakes primarily because of the "self-energizing" effect of drum brakes.

Drum brakes have a self-actuating mechanism. As the brake shoe makes contact with the rotating drum, the friction itself helps pull the shoe tighter against the drum, which amplifies the initial braking force. This helps the driver apply the brakes with less effort.

Disc brakes have no such effect. The entire braking force depends on the hydraulic pressure from the brake pedal. Since there's no self-amplifying mechanism, a brake booster is essential to multiply the driver's foot pressure, making it possible to achieve effective braking.

BÀI LÀM LẠI CỦA NHÓM 3

GRUP3: Sơn, Lâm, Phi, Ngọc

🛞 Comparison Between Drum Brakes and Disc Brakes: Operating Principles and Brake Assist Requirements

In automotive braking systems, drum brakes and disc brakes are the two most commonly used types. Each has distinct operating mechanisms and design characteristics that influence performance, maintenance, and the need for brake assist systems.

Operating Principles

Drum brakes function by pressing brake shoes outward against the inner surface of a rotating drum. When the driver applies the brake pedal, hydraulic pressure from the wheel cylinder forces the shoes into contact with the drum, generating friction that slows the wheel. The enclosed design of drum brakes offers protection from environmental contaminants but limits heat dissipation, making them less suitable for high-speed or high-load applications.

Disc brakes, on the other hand, utilize brake pads that clamp onto both sides of a rotating disc (rotor). Hydraulic pistons housed in the caliper apply pressure to the pads, creating friction directly on the disc surface. This open design allows for superior heat dissipation and faster response times, which is why disc brakes are preferred in modern passenger vehicles and performance applications.

Why Disc Brakes Require More Brake Assist

Despite their higher efficiency, disc brakes typically demand greater brake assist—such as vacuum boosters or hydraulic amplifiers—for several engineering reasons:

• Smaller Contact Area: Brake pads engage only a limited portion of the rotor surface, requiring higher clamping force to achieve sufficient braking torque.

• Lack of Self-Energizing Effect: Unlike drum brakes, which benefit from a self-servo action where the drum’s rotation helps pull the shoes into contact, disc brakes rely entirely on external hydraulic force.

• Rapid Response Requirements: Disc brakes are designed for immediate and precise braking response, especially under emergency conditions. This necessitates stronger and faster hydraulic pressure delivery.

• Environmental Exposure: The open structure of disc brakes makes them more susceptible to water, dust, and debris, requiring consistent and robust braking force to maintain performance.

Conclusion

Drum brakes are well-suited for low-speed or light-duty vehicles due to their simplicity and lower cost. However, disc brakes offer superior performance, heat management, and responsiveness, making them the standard in modern automotive design. To compensate for the lack of mechanical advantage and ensure optimal braking force, disc brake systems are typically paired with advanced brake assist technologies.

1.
