Aspects of the PYP that technology supports

The PYP elements are...….
1. Inquiry
2. Concepts
3. Transdisciplinary Themes
4. Learner Profile
5. Approaches to Learning
6. Action
7. Agency

Technology supports all aspects of the PYP. It is important to note that
“Our focus as teachers should always be on the learning, not on the technology. If you find that technology is driving the learning, instead of the other way around, then it’s time to rethink your approach. Technology integration and implementation should always be authentic and purposeful. We pick up a pencil when it’s the best tool for the job, and technology should be the same—it’s about making decisions about the purpose and potential to support and extend learning (TSM's, 2018, Eleni Kyritsis).
Eleni is a year 3 Primary Years Programme (PYP) teacher from Melbourne, Australia. Eleni believes that when technology is used purposefully, it can transform learning and teaching.

Technology is key in designing inquiries using local and global context. Through the use of skype and virtual excursions, students can access people from all around the world using technology. Students can speak with experts, see places all around the world and talk and connect with students. Because of networking and PYP connections, teachers from around the world can connect their students to students from across the globe.

Fostering supportive environments that remove barriers to learning

The possibilities are endless for the use of technology in classroom settings. With the use of portable devices that can be taken anywhere within the school setting, technology allows for learning to take place almost anywhere, thus removing barriers to learning. There is increased emphasis on flexible learning spaces and less emphasis on fixed desktops in rows. This allows the student to move and collaborate with their device. There are also many ways to record learning and use technology to support learning. This all ensures a supportive learning environment without barriers.

The use of technology to collect students questions/wonderings/ ideas is almost endless. There are many tools to support personal inquiry, action and reflection.
Some examples include..... mindmapping tools like mindmeister, coggle, padlet, etc. There are movie making tools such as moviemaker, adobe spark, iMovie, etc which allow for students to speak through and explain an inquiry. All types of recording such as voice recordings, movie recordings, allow students to show the action and reflection they have taken on a specific inquiry.
