My name is Mitzy Buenrostro. I have lived in San Angelo, Texas for about 18 years. I went to school at Grape Creek and graduated from there in 2019. I then graduated from ASU with my B.A. in Psychology Cum Laude this past fall. I am now a grad student in the Mental Health and Wellness Counseling Program. My professional goal is to continue furthering my education and become an LPC with a private practice of my own. My personal goal on the other hand is to finish college without any debt and have a house of my own.

The ACA Code of Ethics serves as core professional values used to preserve mental health and wellness. It provides guidelines for multiple professions through an ethical commitment. As a counselor, my purpose is to make positive relationships and progress with clients, using this code as the basis for responsible and ethical decision-making. Several standards to keep in mind for my career path include client welfare, confidentiality, cultural sensitivity, and professional competence.

Introductions and Assessing Prior Knowledge.

In this section of unit 1, we got the opportunity to get to know and connect with our peers. We introduced ourselves to one another by creating a thread in the designated discussion board. We shared information such as our program of study, our goals, and other information we felt comfortable sharing. Furthermore, we proceeded to discuss what we learned after looking over the resources we were given. We also talked about any prior knowledge we might have over the materials we would discuss in this course.

This section of unit 1 was vital for the start of the course. It helped not only the students but the professor as well, in learning more about each person involved in the course. I have always felt that doing an icebreaker or another similar activity helps everyone feel more comfortable. It makes an online class feel more welcoming and our peers more real, instead of just another person in our class. By having to do introductions and assessing prior knowledge, I feel I can relate to my peers in certain aspects.

Reference Guide for Mental Health Disorders

Unit 1 had two very important sections. I feel that they were necessary not only for the course in general but vital as the introduction to EDG 6332. We should all know and be aware of disorders along with their definitions, causes, and other important information about them. However, the reference guide for mental health disorders did help give my peers and me a bit of a refresher when it came to the disorders that we researched. I say this because the last time I had a course where we discussed the basics of mental health disorders was a semester or two ago.

Throughout this assignment, we had a spreadsheet with 5 main mental health disorders that then broke down to 2-4 other disorders. We researched the definitions, causes, importance of early intervention, and helpful resources for each specific disorder. It was a simple assignment, however, it did take some time for me to finish it. When looking up the needed information we had to make sure to use credited sites and use the 7th edition of APA to cite those sources. I enjoyed this assignment, especially because I found some very useful and interesting resources that I plan on using in the future. I can also look back to this spreadsheet whenever I am in need of a recap.

Developmental Discussion on Trauma

This unit focused on trauma. As stated at the beginning, "Trauma is a significant concern from a public health perspective because it has been linked to chronic health problems such as heart disease, liver disease, and early death, as well as mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders" (Georgetown University CCHD Issue Brief, n.d.). Throughout this unit, we had a major assignment, which was a discussion board that we worked on in a span of two weeks. This discussion board was broken down into four different posts. Each post discussed different areas of trauma. For example, in post one, we looked at various resources and then answered a handful of questions. For the next entry, we had to choose a documentary that dealt with trauma and discuss why we chose it. However, we had to select a documentary we had not seen before. In the second to last post, we talked about the documentary we watched and how it related to the topic of trauma. Finally, in entry 4 we wrapped up everything we had learned and talked about throughout the other entries.

The developmental discussion on trauma helped us get a better understanding of what exactly it entails. Having to watch a documentary helped to give us an example of a specific type of trauma. By doing these four posts, we were able to look at trauma and figure out how the role of a professional can help someone who has dealt with traumatic events or experiences. Everyone has trauma, whether they are aware of it or not. Some individuals' trauma can affect them sooner and for a longer period of time. Regardless of how big or small the trauma is, it still matters. I enjoyed unit 2 and getting more in-depth into trauma.

This section of unit 3 consisted of a two-hour course, that once completed would get you certified in psychological first aid (PFA). This educational material helps people who are new to disaster response learn what is needed in order to be of assistance to others. It also helps professionals who might want a bit of a refresher in disaster response. Throughout the curriculum, we learned about the four main principles of PFA along with the 8 PFA core actions.

I feel that having to do the psychological first aid online course and getting PFA certified is very beneficial for me and my peers. It is helping to prepare us for when we are out in the field dealing with a crisis or a disaster. The layout of the training is done in a way where we are able to interact throughout it. I enjoyed taking this online class and learning how to prepare, look, listen, and link. The activities, videos, and different tips given within the curriculum have helped to give me a better understanding of how my profession along with other professions can make a difference in a crisis or disaster.

We are provided with knowledgeable information and resources on how to prevent an issue from escalating and responding efficiently. This unit also covered strategies to evaluate the level of threat in any situation or environment. A big part of this section was completing a group project over prevention and intervention when there is a crisis or a threat.

This assignment provided my classmates and me with an opportunity to learn about a specific issue within our society. The issue my group chose to do research on was school violence. The research provided us with background information, organization role, protocols, and both prevention and intervention methods. It also gave us an opportunity to collaborate with one another, communicate effectively, and depict a topic's impact as a group.
