There are many examples of Symbolism in “The Necklace.” Symbolism is anything that stands for or represents something else. In other words, something is a symbol for something else. In “The Necklace,” symbols appear throughout the story. The symbol of “The Necklace” can represent how greed and jealousy can take over your life. The symbol of  the ball can represent how others influence each other. 

The necklace reveals that the greed inside of us can take over what’s really important. The necklace was very wanted and the greed of having it took over Matilda’s true self. The ball is a way for people to interact. It is showing greed because some people want to look the best at the ball. This can show the theme because looking the best (greed) can take away your fun at the ball.

  

The theme of the necklace is “Greed for material possessions robs us of what’s truly important.” In this story Matilda in the beginning all she cared about was fame and wanting to impress the people around her and fill their greed of they perceive of her but as you read on further into the story she gets more likable and more retable. She uses the necklace to gain back her friends trust by letting go of her worker, Marie- Claire and she and her husband had to borrow money from family and friends to make up for the cost of the necklace, The dress in the story could symbolise how she was greedy and wanted everything that she could not afford.

The author Guy de Maupassant uses symbolism to reveal the theme in many ways. The reason why he does this  is to show the greed, and how material possession  has affected Matilda. If he did not stress this idea enough then the storyline would have not come off as strong as it does when he uses symbolism for example. The diamond necklace is like a teacher. It teaches Matilda that she should always tell the truth no matter the consequences and that glamorous things are not always what it seems. The aftermath of her wrong actions is that her husband has lost interest in her and  I think she should start to realize that it was her fault and all of it is over a material possession she felt she had to have. This concludes that greed for material possessions robs us of what’s truly important.

The theme that we came up with during class time was “Greed for material possession robs us of what’s truly important.” Although the necklace was way less than what they had to refund, she was being greedy for the way she didn’t wanna go to the ball without a piece of jewelry. Her passion to be rich and look like everyone else overcame the true meaning of the ball, which was to come as you are and have a good time. She overlooked and overdid the way it should’ve been handled with that being said she had to do something that wasn’t meant to be done if she wasn’t greedy and had so much passion to be like others she forgot what was truly important.

This greed and ambition for possessions and pride caused her to lose the sight of what was really important at the time. That is just one example of how symbolism is used to reveal the theme. Really, when you read something that is symbolising something, that spark goes off in your head, and you understand what the story means.

Symbolism can help reveal the theme. First off, Matilda borrowing this necklace shows how she let her greed blind her. When she loses the necklace she is robbed of her friendship, happiness and even love with herself. I know this, because Matilda is elated all night by her luxuries that greed bought her, but when she loses these her happiness falls down the drain, because she let herself be consumed by greed she loses more important. Such as happiness, self respect and love for herself. Another symbolic item is, Matilda buying this expensive dress symbolizes once again her greed taking over her, she lets herself be blinded by “ luxuries “ (Maupassant, 12.) The dress represents how greedy she was to be better than others and she wanted to show others how beautiful she would look with new accessories. When she walked into the ball with this beautiful dress everyone thought she was stunning, but her beauty blinded her from what was really important. Her husband loved her and spent his savings just for her to buy new things for one ball. She didn’t pay attention to him at the ball, and she danced with other men. Another symbol in the necklace, is when Matilda was wearing rags near the end of the story. Matilda wearing rags represents how Matilda was after she paid off her debt. She used to be conceited until she learned what hard work really was and what it took to maintain a normal  life, instead of being wealthy and having nice things. This shows how if she had just let go of her greed and pride then she would have had a better life. This reveals, all of these items reveal the theme, greed for material possessions robs us of what’s truly important.

In "The Necklace" the theme is “Greed for material possessions robs us of what's truly important."  He uses the literary devices to create a theme throughout the story.In this case the author’s theme is valid because Matilda wanting the necklace which made her act selfish she ended up losing  everything that she loved including her husband. She was happy and she wanted to look the best which made her  suffer the consequences.

Those examples that were listed point us to our theme because they show different situations in the story that take place that describe how Mathilda wanted to be perfect, but one mistake haunted her forever. By losing the diamond necklace, she had to accept the fact that she needed to buy a new diamond necklace, though she was afraid to tell Madame Forestier that she had lost it. She was worried about being fashionable and perfect, but was not being reasonable. Her need for fashion and perfection in the eyes of others ruined her life and the life of her family forever. All of this evidence proves the theme, “Greed for material possessions robs us of what is truly important.”
