Thoughts

As far as music and gender intersecting the music I listen to everyday, there are copious amounts of instances. The songs describe and even reiterate gender roles, whether male or female. Of course, with me being female, I tend to pay more attention to the feminine ones that I can relate to. I find it so refreshing to hear someone with the same thoughts and concerns as I have about the female role that we play. The artists are very effective in elaborating and conveying the messages of the gender roles. They think of things that I may not be so quick to think to say, but it is certainly something that has crossed my mind or that I have felt or experienced. Some of these would include how I might feel obligated to carry certain tasks out or restrictions to abide by and other expectations due to my gender and the role I’ve been assigned. Roles in Opera were affected by gender as well. “The leading female character might also sing of getting revenge over her enemies,” if she were a queen (Dell’Antonio). The males were the ones who sang of battle and warfare. If they sang of love their gender would dictate the perspective on the subject. “Well into the 1800s women were generally forbidden from singing in public Catholic rituals” (Dell’Antonio). Only certain instances in Opera are appropriate for women. While the lines between the gender roles have been becoming increasingly blurred and despite how far we’ve come with gender equality, I believe it is evident even through today’s music that those lines and degree of inequality, do very much still exist.

No Doubt - Just A Girl

“Cause they won’t let me drive late at night,” and “Oh I’m just a girl, all pretty and petite, so don’t let me have any rights," are some of the lyrics from the video below. Driving late at night was something that my mother-in-law didn't exactly approve of me doing. It was a cause for concern for her and she would check up on me but it was clear that was something I wasn’t “supposed” to do. Years ago, I used to smoke cigarettes and it would upset my mother, especially given that she’s from another country and was born in the 1940’s. Looking back, it’s actually pretty comical how she almost scolded me once, saying, “Vietnamese women don’t smoke.” A friend of mine experienced something similar from her British mother so she wouldn’t dare let her find out. This particular song really speaks to me because I am able to really relate to the lyrics. Being able to relate to a song helps me to get through whatever issue and feel like I’m not alone in this.

Beyoncé - If I Were A Boy

Beyoncé sings about how her life would have been different if she were a boy. She would be able to do as she pleases and “never get confronted for it,” whether it’s in a romantic relationship or in life in general. Towards the end of the song, she states that she, “would make up the rules,” as she goes. Although, this song mostly relates to relationships, the video depicts Beyoncé as a police woman. Women in law enforcement, is for the most part, perfectly acceptable in our society today but not so much a century ago when there were very few and extremely limited positions within this field. In the film, Mozart’s Sister, Nannerl was forbidden from playing the violin and composing music as she got older, in order to conform to the gender role norm for women at the time. Life would have been different and her musical abilities would not have been neglected and discouraged had she not been a woman. Music provides a way for us to convey our ideas and opinions on gender.

This one I actually find to be pretty amusing. Although me and my husband share the household duties, there are some things that I'm better at and things that he may be better at. He wouldn't mind trying to cook and I wouldn't mind trying to wash the cars but in our case, we tend to stick to what we are naturally inclined to or are better at doing. Although that's not to say that men aren't as good as women at cooking. My brother, who is a talented cook, is one of many males who are exceptional and maybe there are women who are great at washing cars but it's not my area of expertise to say the least.

Although this was originally a poster that was calling for women to work while their husbands were at war, this is basically how I feel around the house, for the most part. I think I do quite a bit more than what is expected of women managing the household. My husband has somewhat of an idea of how to fix things but I'm the main "handyman" and technician which may seem strange to some. Assembling things, remodeling, fixing technical issues with the devices, consoles, etc, are done through me.
