A jury has convicted a white Milwaukee man who was accused of throwing acid on a Latino man’s face during a racist attack in 2019. Clifton Blackwell, a white 64 year old man was convicted in April of first-degree reckless injury with a hate crime enhancement.The court sentenced Blackwell to a maximum term of 15 years -- 10 years in prison followed by five years of supervised release -- with credit for 117 days served in jail. On May 25, Minneapolis police officers arrested George Floyd, a 46-year-old black man, after a convenience store employee called 911 and told the police that Mr. Floyd had bought cigarettes with a counterfeit $20 bill. Seventeen minutes after the first squad car arrived at the scene, Mr. Floyd was unconscious and pinned beneath three police officers, showing no signs of life. A widespread outrage broke out on the internet after a street camera footage circulated online showing Officer Derek Chauvin holding his knee on Mr. Floyd’s neck on a Minneapolis street corner as he gasped for breath. Mr. Chauvin was convicted of murder in April 2021 and was sentenced to 22 and a half years in prison.

On March 16, 2021, a shooting spree occurred at three spas or massage parlors in the metropolitan area of Atlanta, Georgia, United States. Eight people were killed, six of whom were Asian women, and one other person was wounded. A suspect, 21-year-old Robert Aaron Long, was taken into custody later that day. He told police he was motivated by a sexual addiction that was at odds with his Christianity, for which he had spent time in an evangelical treatment clinic. He was charged with 19 crimes in Fulton County, and 23 in Cherokee County. Long pleaded guilty to the Cherokee County charges and was sentenced to life without parole. The brazen shootings, which took the lives of six women of Asian descent, stirred considerable outrage and fear in the Asian-American community. Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms of Atlanta  said, “Whatever the motivation was for this guy, we know that the majority of the victims were Asian. We also know that this is an issue that is happening across the country. It is unacceptable, it is hateful and it has to stop.”

A teenage gunman entranced by a white supremacist ideology known as replacement theory opened fire at a supermarket: Tops, in Buffalo on Saturday, may 13, 2022, methodically shooting and killing 10 people and injuring three more, 11 of the people shot were Black and two were white. It was a racially motivated hate crime in one of the deadliest racist massacres in recent American history. The authorities identified the gunman as 18-year-old Payton S. Gendron of Conklin, a small town in New York’s rural Southern Tier. Mr. Gendron drove more than 200 miles to mount his attack, which he also live streamed on Twitch, the police said. The 18 year old gunman pleaded not guilty and is left behind a manifesto.

A barista at a Philadelphia Starbucks called the police on two black men who were waiting in the coffee shop for a friend. As a result of the social media outcry that followed, Starbucks shut down all 8,000 of its stores one day for anti-bias training.
