Baby Suggs, who is Sethe's  mother in law, dies from depression after Sethe's sons escape due to the haunting ghost. We get insights into Sethe's character and past. Unexpectedly, Paul D, a former fellow slave from Sweet Home in Kentucky, arrives. <strong>Setting: 1848-1853, Kentucky. </strong>Sethe shares about her deceased child and the tough times at Sweet Home, including a traumatic incident with boys and Schoolteacher. When Paul D visits and he unintentionally angers the ghost.  Paul D tries fighting with the ghost, upsetting Denver, who finds comfort in the only companion she shares her home with.</p>]]></description>

Sethe ran to her dead mother, but Nan, another enslaved woman, pulled Sethe away from her mother’s body when Sethe tried to search for the mark. <strong>Setting: 1848, Kentucky. </strong>Sethe explains that she  got her crystal earrings from Mrs. Garner as a wedding gift. She does not remember much about her mother aside from the fact that she had a cross burned to her flesh. </p>]]></description>

Afterward, he found himself unable to leave. When Sethe realizes that Halle saw everything that schoolteacher and his nephews did to her, she is initially angry that he did not intervene or do anything. </p>]]></description>

She takes her daughters with her. <strong>Setting: 1855, Kentucky/Ohio.  </strong><br>Upon arriving at 124, Sethe was warmly received by Baby Suggs, who bathed her before granting her a reunion with her two boys and her daughter, who was already crawling. Sethe entertained her daughter by jingling the earrings gifted by Mrs. Garner. In the 28 days spent in Cincinnati before her daughter's passing, Sethe found joy in being part of the community. <strong>Setting: 1875, Ohio. </strong>Sethe comes back to the present and is overcome by a sensation of being strangled. Denver assists her, and eventually, Sethe regains her breath. Beloved provides comfort by massaging Sethe, and Sethe identifies the touch as reminiscent of her dead daughter's ghost. Subsequently, Denver accuses Beloved of choking Sethe, and Beloved escapes to the stream.<strong>Setting: 1862, Ohio </strong>Denver remembers when she went to Lady Jones school. Nelson Lord mentioned her mother going to jail. Two years after that, Denver heard the baby ghost for the first time.</p>]]></description>
