At the start of 1915, approximately 2 million Armenians lived in the Ottoman Empire, near modern-day Turkey. The leaders of the Turkish government began planning to deport and kill Armenians living in the empire during 1915.

Why the Armenians?

The Armenians were targeted because they were an ethnic and religious minority. The Turkish nationalistic regime deported and killed many of its non-Muslims. Greeks and Assyrians were also secondary targets.

The Killings Begin - PAULUS

Between 1915 and 1923, as many as a million and a half Armenians were either murdered or died from the conditions of forced deportations, starvation, dehydration, and disease.

The Killings End

When the deportations ended in the early 1920s, approximately 1.5 million Armenians had been executed by the Young Turks.

After the Genocide

After the genocide ended, the remaining Armenians were forcibly deported and not welcomed back to Turkey, which was the new country formed after the collapse of the Ottoman Empire.
