Slavery was brought to America by the Spanish and English colonists. For about 250 years about 645,000 Africans were imported, this was legal. In the year 1820 Northern States made this act illegal. This was highly controversial since Southern States were Agrarian States which mean't their economy relied on slaves. This was highly controversial because Southerners highly depended on Slaves so they were pro slavery, Northerners believed this was inhuman and wanted the abolition of slavery.

The Election of 1860 was an important event in the future of the Nation. It was the Presidential election and it had 4 candidates, these were: John Bell, Stephen A Douglass, John C. Breckenridge and Abraham Lincoln. The main issue of this election was slavery and state's rights. Abraham Lincoln's goal was to stop slavery from expanding and let the already slave states alone to let them die on their own. Southerners were afraid of Abraham Lincoln and his policies; they thought he was an abolitionist and that he was negatively affecting them, for that same reason Lincoln didn't appear on the majority of Southern Ballots. Despite this, Lincoln won. The tension increased; Northerners really liked Abe Lincoln, Southerners hated him and couldn't tolerate having a President who they didn't vote for.

After the Mexican American War the USA almost doubled in size from the lands gained. The Compromise of 1850 was the compromise that would decide whether those lands became slave or free states.
The Compromise of 1850 increased sectional tensions by enacting popular sovereignty in the new states. The Compromise decided that each state would choose whether they would become free or slave states with a feature called popular sovereignty. This deepened sectoinal tensions as people fought in the states to either become a slave or free state.

Harriet Beecher Stove's book, "Uncle Tom's Cabin" which talked about Tom, which is an enslaved person. It shows all the injustices he goes through and all the things he has to go through both physically and mentally. This book became really popular becoming the second most published book of the time, it was only behind the bible. Northerners opened their eyes and became more aware, it greatly strengthened Northern Abolitionism. The Southerners stated that the book was an exaggeration. This further increased tension because the northerners now had another reason to want to abolish slavery.
