I will be interviewing J’Monet Hill, because she is one of my best friends and she fits my topic perfectly. I will begin the interview process the first weekend in February and finish the following week. The interviews will take place at her house. I will both record the interview and write down information as the interview is happening. I will use photos that relate to the hardship that we discuss in the interview to give a visual to the reader.

Many people have hardships in their life, but I am going to be interviewing an individual I have only known for a year and a half, but I feel like I’ve known my whole life. This young woman has been through a lot as have most of us have, but I felt the need to tell her story.

For myself, I have dealt with a lot. I am happy to have made it through, but I did get scratched along the way. And that’s kind of what I want to show. How a person can make it through these hardships seemingly unhurt by them, yet they are. (I don’t know if I can use her name, so I won’t just in case).

Her name is J. J on the outside, or when you first meet her seems to be a fun-loving gal always smiling and laughing, but when you really get to talking you see deeper inside her soul.

The First questions I would ask J is what is her name, race, and gender. Then get the basics such as what she wants to be when she graduates, or what she wishes to accomplish just so the reader can try and imagine themselves in her shoes/ form a connection with J.

Next, I would ask if she has endured any hardships, considering she is the only one I am interviewing, and my topic is on hardships the answer should be yes. I will ask her if she believes the hardships, she went through were worth it or if she can tell if they will be worth it. These answers will determine how the rest of the interview will go. Once we establish, she has gone through trauma, I will ask her to list off three big hardships in her life. Knowing her as well as I do, I went ahead and picked three so I could get a layout of the questions I wanted to ask.

First, I would ask J about her grandmothers passing. I would first ask who she was to J, I know that this could get emotional, but their will be tissues. I will ask what influences she had on J. And what it was like to lose her. Again, I want to make all this very detailed and deep (sticky as my English 1101 would have said) to where is draws the reader in and keeps them wanting to know more about J and her life story. After the hardest question is over, I will move onto the next one. J is a part of the LGBTQ community (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/ questioning). The first question I will ask is which category she feel as though she fall under, if any at all. Then I’d ask her about her coming out into the world as the person she feels she is, how it feels to no longer hide just because she’s different. I will ask J to give details once again, so the reader feels her story and wants to learn more, if you haven’t noticed already, that is my secondary goal, the first is getting J’s story out. The final thing I will ask J about is how her weight and height has affected her life throughout the years. I won’t ask her weight, but I will ask how tall she is, and if she wishes to give us a weight that is fine, but I will not make that mandatory. Once we get the logistics out of the way, I will ask her where in her life has this issue affected her the most. How has this issue affected her, and how has it made her stronger?

Their will be more than one interview, the first interview I will get the basic questions as I mentioned earlier and start about hardships. The next interview will be based on the question of her grandmother (if she wishes to share) sense this will be the hardest one to answer. The third interview will be about the last two hardships. Then the final interview will be how she dealt with the hardships, and any other things she wishes to add.

For some research outside of the interview I will be looking up different types of hardships, such as financial, physical, and mental. Then I will be researching coping methods or how to help someone else going through a hardship. I want this project to remain very deep and personal, so I will keep it based around J as much as possible, but outside research will help as well.

I hope I did this correctly, I greatly thank you for your response to my email. It helped greatly. I am excited to hear feedback on what you believe I need work on, or what sounds good.

Questions

1. What does a hardship mean to you?

2. How important is surviving a hardship to you?

3. What were some of the biggest hardships in your life?

4. Based on these hardships, which one affected you the most?

5. How did each hardship affect you differently?

6. Would you change anything if you could?

Dubi, Michael, et al. Trauma, PTSD, Grief & Loss: The 10 Core Competencies for Evidence-

Based Treatment. PESI Publishing & Media, 2017.

My first secondary source is a book. This book is about trauma PTSD grief and loss. Now I didn’t go and read the whole book because it’s about eight chapters long, but I did go and read the recommended pages. In the first page it recommended it talks about recovering from grief. It talks about counseling systems. It was the five components to grief support, listening developing and maintaining the therapeutic relationship providing psychoeducation providing case management and assisting the client with self-regulation. It then goes into explaining each step into more detail. What I really like about this Source is that it provides visuals to show you how to get through the steps of grief. Next it moves on to the tasks of mourning. Therefore, tasks of morning. Excepting the reality of loss processing the pain of grief adjusting to a world without the deceased or to a material loss and finding an enduring connection. As before it goes into detail explaining each step. And finally it closes out the chapter with a case study about healing from Traumatic grief. This is just one chapter recommended to read from the book. But it is already showing how one can rise above and heal from a loss.

Swami, Viren, and Amy Sunshine Harris. “The Effects of Striped Clothing on Perceptions of

Body Size.” Social Behavior & Personality: An International Journal, vol. 40, no. 8, Oct.

2012, pp. 1239–1244.

The second article is called the effects of striped clothing on perceptions of body size. Now if you have a wider waist line your mama always told you to never wear horizontal stripes or if you were on the taller side your mama told you to wear horizontal stripes or if you were tall and wide you just never wore stripes period. It starts out by stating that in recent studies it indicates that contrary to popular fashion advise horizontal lines do not give the impression of larger body size. The article then states that there’s no significant difference in body size perceptions when she is wearing vertical stripes or no stripes. If this is true then why is there such a widespread belief that horizontal stripes makes one look happier than they really are this was said on page 1240. After the introduction it then goes into the method or the study there was about 120 participants 58 women and 62 men from a university in England. In the test there was three dresses. A dress with horizontal stripes, a dress with vertical stripes, and a dress with no stripes. Once they have the dresses on they were into a room and they had to be judged on the size of their body. Results show that there is little to no difference between whether a person was half deer or not between the vertical striped dress and the no striped dress but when it came to the horizontal striped dress the person seemed a little heavier in the body size category. There is no slimming effect of the vertical striped dress in relation to the no stripes dress. And although the horizontal dress may give the appearance of a larger body size it only gave a slightly larger body size.

CHECKING IN ON HOW THE BODY-

POSITIVITY MOVEMENT IS IMPACTING WOMEN.” Cosmopolitan, vol. 266, no. 1,

Jan. 2019, pp. 78–79.

My third article is about body positivity on Instagram a lot of the times we see Instagram as bringing girls down but in my interview my interviewee brought up how her followers mentioned things about her that they saw as beautiful and that they liked and said of things that they hated so I just wanted to see how as mentioned in this article just looking right off the good vibes that they get from Instagram so here we go. The article starts out with talking about how major fashion brands are expanding their sizing options to future women with diverse and often retouched bodies in their ad campaigns it then list different brands such as third love. It then goes to talk about different modeling agencies who now represent a group of girls which has increased in the past number of years modeling agencies used to only represent models from sizes 0 to 2 but now are broadening their sizes this is good because most of The worlds population of women and men are not a size 0 to 2 but a size 6 to 8 or even larger. It then goes to speak about different women and how they felt left out even with just being a size 4 which isn’t that much bigger than a size 2 but in the modeling world it is but they say that thanks to Instagram or thanks to social media or thanks to the new body positivity movement they feel as though they can love their body and they can love themselves.

Sherlock, Mary, and Danielle L. Wagstaff. “Exploring the Relationship between Frequency of

Instagram Use, Exposure to Idealized Images, and Psychological Well-Being in

Women.” Psychology of Popular Media Culture, Apr. 2018.

My final article explores the relationship between the use of Instagram and idolizing images and the well-being of women. It starts off by talking about mental health effects of social networking and the focus of Facebook and affects of Instagram on the psychological health and well-being of women the study is aimed to address the link between Instagram uses and a range of psychological variables into parts. The participants were 129 women age between 18 and 35 years old. They started by asking the woman questions related to mental health and self perceptions the results showed that the frequency of Instagram use and correlation to depressive symptoms, Self-esteem, general and physical appearance anxiety, and body dissatisfaction and that the relationship between Instagram use and each of these variables is mediated by social comparison orientation. In the next participants were exposed to a range of either beauty, fitness, or travel Instagram images. The beauty and fitness images significantly decreased how the participant felt about themselves. The article then goes to explain stats about users worldwide. And how they are influenced by different kind of things they see on social media. It talks about how because social media can be updated so quickly and how images can be portrayed that ordinary people may perceive ordinary in a very different way. This could lead them in perceiving their body in a very different way which could lead them to develop depression or body anxiety. It also brings up other things such as direct messaging functions and likes or comments as other things that could influence the way one feels about themselves. Depending on how many likes one gets could determine how attractive one may feel. It later states that an investigation linked that frequent Instagram use was associated depression symptoms. After the introduction it goes into the experiment as I mentioned earlier there are 129 participants ranging from the age of 18 to 35 who currently use Instagram. The participants then had to do a survey to see how depressed they were. During the next part of the test Instagram images from travel and beauty and fitness or taken off of Instagram and put into a Instagram frames. After viewing the images they then went to go answer questions. Below it has examples of what the Instagram picture looks like and it has results of the variables and graphs of the results.
