As a 9th grade teacher, I noticed some of the biggest gaps in writing, largely due to the middle schools my students were coming from. Some had achieved excellent writing instruction while others had received barely any. I am still working to find/develop writing scaffolds to help close this gap, but found that the students who responded best to writing support did so because they had strong relationships with me

I also use a randomizing system for cold calling, but I'm on the lookout for other approaches. Obviously we can't fix economic inequity which is the root of these gaps, but I am worried about the unconscious bias that might lead me to lean into students who are more engaged in class.

The performance data on my roster did not show any major gaps in terms of performance by racial demographics, but there were indicators that suggested gaps based on being economically disadvantaged. I wonder what I can do to help close the performance gaps for ED students, and I wonder to what degree racial demographics might be an underlying factor even if it is not blatantly apparent from performance data.
