Then there was a baby on the way we needed more space."

What this quote helps us understand about the chapter is the living conditions Julio and Blanca live in and how they are struggling to make ends meet so they don't even turn on there lights because of the electricity bill. Also they have a kid on the way so they need more space for all of them to live together.

Ishak

Even though Willie Bodega didn't come to his position through legal business practices he considers himself in no way a drug dealer, but a dream salesman. Bodega wants to be able to accomplish his goals, so he hires people he believes will help him reach whatever achievement he sets himself to. To Bodega, you either work with him or for him, no other option is available. However Bodega believes that those that work with him will also gain what they have sought after as well. "It's all a matter of where yo'r standing, where you comin' from. Willie Bodega don't sell rocks. Willie Bodega sells dreams." Bodega is someone who'll attempt to get his way to benefit him by most means and Chino sits with him to hear him out. Although at first Chino believes him to be a stuck up drug dealer Bodega rebukes that thought claiming that he's way more than just a drug dealer. Oh and Sapo is reading a playboy magazine in the background. - Christian Eidangbe

The importance of the title "Spanish for "Toad"" is that it is talking about the meaning Sapo's nickname and where he got that name from. For example, the text states, "But in truth, Sapo did look like a toad." This shows that Sapo got his nickname because he resembled a toad. He had fat lips, eyes that bulged out of his sockets, he was strong, and squatty. The title helps us better understand the chapter by helping us understand Sapo better. It includes what Sapo's behavior and personality were like. This chapter talks about the importance of nicknames and how people got their names. -Fauziya

The major events/discussions that take place in this chapter are the introduction of the three characters, Chino, Sapo, and Blanca. A key idea that we learn is how they get their nicknames. They get their nicknames from their personalities or physical traits based on their identities in the neighborhood. Additionally, we also learn how teachers treated students and what their teaching was like. For example, the text states, "To the white teachers we were all going to end up delinquents."

The people who are involved in this chapter are Chino, Sapo, and Blanca. Sapo is a figure in the neighborhood that is considered "dangerous". For example, the text states, ""I don't want to see you hanging around with that demonio," she'd say to me." This proves that Chino's Mom did not like Sapo and believed that her son would become a bad person if he still hung around Sapo. Sapo represents the problems/challenges and the dangers of the streets in East Harlem. Chino's role is that he is the narrator. Chino talks about his life and how East Harlem/the community was before. He has been best friends with Sapo ever since they were young. Chino also likes this girl named Blanca, who is a Pentecostal girl. For instance, the text states,"She had light tan skin, hazel eyes, and a beautiful mane of semibrown, semiblond hair." and "She was intelligent, polite, and friendly. and since she never cursed everyone called her Blanca." This implies that Blanca is one of the prettiest girls in the church. She later on marries Chino. -Fauziya

Some internal conflicts that are being presented here are Chino's romantic feelings and his views on reality. Chino likes Blanca but he is scared that he might get rejected. According to the text, it states, "You know, Sapo," I said to him one day as we were preparing to fly kites on the roof of a project, "if we could ride on top of these things, we could get out of here. You know?" This suggests that Chino wants to live a better life but due to the conditions of East Harlem, it appears he feels that his hopes don't seem close to reality. Some external conflicts here are the struggles being faced in the East Harlem community and the impact of Sapo on Chino. For example, the text states, "You lived in projects with pissed-up elevators, junkies on the stairs, posters of the rapist of the month, and whores you never knew were whores until you saw men go in and out of their apartments like through revolving doors." This shows that people lived through poverty, bad living conditions, and high crime rates in East Harlem. -Fauziya
