Reflective Conversation - What have you come to value most during these times of slowing down? What have you realized has become non-essentials, you could let go of, in your life and in your work? by mvk - Kutzschenbach Institute for Sustainability Studies

If we were to reimagine ourselves going forward, and re-evaluate what is truly essential, what would this mean for you?

Our weekly reflection series is about taking a journey, together with you, on some of the challenging questions we face in creating a sustainable society. It’s about engaging in conversation, sharing ideas and co-creating new narratives for the future.

I value more now the things I miss, like freedom to go out anywhere and enjoy in the company with other people. There is also mixed feeling, one to enjoy that everything is calmer, but also anxious about the chaos will come after. How we can in future ensure we have our freedom but are not too busy to appreciate it? How we can organise ourself not to be threatened by such shocks?

Great question. But I would challenge it too. My life hasn't slowed down. There's just less movement. Less going from point A to point B for no apparent reason. Leaving that out has given me space to create more things of value for me and my organization. If anything, I'm speeding up...

Slowing down - partly, yes, from fast traveling for work. Valuable to be more in one place, and have a local rhythm, kind of. So hasting around is a non-essential. Too much virtual time on the computer is non-essential. If there were not essentials which are now restricted - like roaming free in nature, and being with whom we like where ever and whenever we feel like being with such persons. So those are essentials.
