The Kansas-Nebraska Act repealed the Missouri Compromise, created two new territories, and allowed for popular sovereignty. It also produced a violent uprising known as "Bleeding Kansas," as pro slavery and antislavery activists flooded into the territories to sway the vote. The Kansas-Nebraska act made it possible for the Kansas and Nebraska territories to open to slavery. The Missouri Compromise had prevented this from happening since 1820.

The Missouri compromise did not apply to the huge territory gained From Mexico In 1848. the issue was crucial to the northerners who wanted to stop Slavery from spreading, Many Supporters Of slavery viewed it as an attack on slavery by the North and an attempt by the south to gain too much power. With the territories controlled by the Us, The nations could no longer ignore Slavery issues. By making these territories a state it would harm the balance between Free States and Slave States, but after a while Henry proposed an agreement and gave both sides what they wanted.
