25.01.2023

In the above video, I have shown the basic functions of the Subtitle Edit programme that is used to translate subtitles.

1) If you want to add a transcript to the programme, you can click on File --> New and then you can add a given text that you want to translate.

2) If you want to add a video to the programme, you need to choose View --> Open video file and choose a video. But this is also possible to add a video by dragging it into the video pane.

3) When you double-click on a given segment, the same moment automatically appears on the video, which is important and useful for a translator, because when creating the subtitles he/she can immediately see them in the video and check if the subtitles match the speaking pace.

4) When a given row is too long we can divide it into two shorter ones as I have shown in the video. However, sometimes this is difficult to achieve a proper length of the row so we can also choose an option Split line! When the row is too long it is marked in red.

5) We can check if there are any errors by clicking on the Spell check tab.

6) Additionally, we can choose a preferred language of the programme: Options --> Choose language

7) Other useful options: Options --> Settings

- General (information about single line max length, optimal chars/sec, max. chars/sec, etc.)

- Subtitle formats

- Shortcuts

- Syntax colouring (we can change the colour of subtitles that are too long)

- File type associations
