When I was really young I used to be so afraid of losing in video games (Specifically Super Mario Galaxy). I always asked my dad to complete the hard parts for me. I can't recall ever finishing the game because of this issue.

This habit actually stuck with me up until very recently. Whenever I got to a hard part, I'd freeze, wait, and over prepare myself. It took me a while to gather the courage to go into a game challenge head-first with little fear of failure.

I used to purposely mess up words early into spelling bees because I didn't want to put effort in only to fail and/or embarrass myself. Even if it seemed easy, I didn't have the confidence to try. I never willing joined one either for this same reason.

By not participating I feel like I really smothered my growth. If I had tried I know I had the potential to do well even if i didn't win. I'm capable of doing these things now, so if I had only participated back then maybe I would be much better at it now.

Back when I struggled with math a lot, I wasn't exactly in the best headspace then. When I'd come across an issue I seemingly couldn't solve, I'd sometimes give in right there. I used to think "If I'm going to fail anyway, what's the point of trying?"

Avoiding even trying to take on something you struggle with makes things so much harder in the long run. I have the potential to do a ton of things but that fear of failure got in my way. I had to actually fail something to learn that it wasn't as scary as I thought it was.
