When investing, it is important to diversify, and "spreading your money across different investments means the likelihood of losing all your capital is significantly decreased. It is important to remember that risk can be reduced, but not eliminated altogether by diversification."

Why is This Important?

"Once you choose to target a level of risk based on your goals, time horizon, and tolerance for volatility, diversification may provide the potential to improve returns for that level of risk." Once you begin diversifying your assets, investing becomes much safer and you are more likely to gain rewards, even if they are smaller. This steady gain of small rewards will quickly out pace the high risk high reward style of investing.

When building your portfolio, it's important to look for assets, ideally ones that have a higher rewards for a lower risk. By getting different assets, your portfolio will be protected if one begins to fail, since you'll have some support.

"Typically a high risk investor would be someone who has very good knowledge of investments, who wants to achieve the biggest returns possible." Since I have little knowledge of the stock market, my portfolio won't include a lot of high risk investments, once I feel safe with the assets I have, I can look into investing in a few stocks, although not too many.

"Medium risk investors might be those starting to near retirement, somebody who has less time to invest or wants to take a smaller amount of risk." I'm still a ways off from retirement, but since this isn't as risky I'll put a little more medium risks into my portfolio than high risks. I'll try to diversify my assets between share, bonds, and property, because I feel like these are a lot safer than some of the high stakes stocks.

"A low risk investor would typically be an older person who is approaching retirement, or is already retired, somebody who needs an emergency fund or someone who does not want to take any risks with their money." I'm not retiring, but do want to take lower risks in case of an emergency, so this will be the largest part of my portfolio. I'll invest into a savings account or government bonds, since these provide regular income.
